advice appreciated

I have a 10 month old walker pup that I bought at 6 months. he sat for two months because of a leash law in my state. I turned him out on his first bear and he ran and treed the bear his second round the same night he dropped out of the race at about 2 miles so i picked him up and let him stay in the box till I got home and let him rest in his pen till the next evening i turned him loose at a bait with his littermate and they cold trailed about a mile then jumped the bear hot he made it about another mile and then dropped out now hes whining some when he walks like his muscles hurt and he dont want to move from his dog house this is my first time bear hunting and i would like to get some advice on if i should keep running him or let him rest for a day or if maybe he has something wrong with him any advice would be greatly appreciated.

id say - - let him rest-- at least -

best not to push a pup too hard till he gets in shape

dog a little sore after a bear race is normal--

maybe you can bend legs - joints --check for a break- -

first check bottoms of his feet

compare with his littermate--
bothers me when u say he whines when he walks-

most bear dogs have high tolerance for pain -

if he doesnt recover fast --id say see a vet too

here is a few things you should check routinely

his ears should be warm and nose cold --

i guess a thermometer would work too lol

push on his gum till it turns white , then --watch how fast color changes back --

this should be quick-- try it on normal dog -

if its slow can mean internal bleeding--
when its slow its usually pretty serious

pinch his hide and watch that return to normal --

if its slow --dog is dehydrated -- this is normal after extreme race but should change back to normal fast

watch them eat- if hes a hog like most hounds and wont eat this could be first sign somethings real wrong -

watch stool and urine for blood

if your gonna be a bear hunter you are probably gonna learn to do some vet work

knowing when you need a vet and when you dont is hard -

just get in routine of checking dogs out a little and all the above is stuff anybody can do-

sorta like vital signs on people

if all above is normal id say that you dont need to rush to vet rite now-- not an emergency --

if not recovered in a few days -u might still need a vet-lol

hes eating and drinking fine and other than slight stiffness hes stiill limping on one front leg but hes doing alot better his gums r fine and hes hydrated well. i've massaged his legs and bent his joints and hes got full motion but his muscle on what would be our tricep is tender and the reason hes limping is hes trying to keep that muscle from moving so hes walking straight legged on the one side I talked to my vet and he said he probably pulled that muscle and to give him time and start him in slow hes a bear hunter also I thank you for the advice the only thing I have to keep an eye on is his temp from here and try to keep him moving slow so he dont relapse thanks again.

I run a coon dog on bear and he was not used to the long chases. The next day he would not even come out of the box. His lower legs would swell up and you could not hunt him for three or fours days. I seen on a post to rub horse linement on them. You can get this at any farm store. It is for horse muscles. You might want to use gloves it makes your hand tingle a little if you don't. I rubbed it on my dog and he was good to go in about a day. As far as his feet - they got tougher in time or use a tuff foot product.

I LET HIM SIT TILL YESTERDAY AND HE WAS BOUNCING AROUND FINE I TALKED TO MY VET AND HE SAID HE COULD HAVE A LACK OF A VITAMEN IN HIS BODY SO I SUPPLIMENT HIM WITH A MULTIVITAMEN ALSO SWITCHED HIM TO PKC FROM DIAMOND, LITTLE HIGHER PROTIEN AND LESS FAT. i TURNED HIM LOOSE ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATE OFF OF A BAIT AND HE RAN EAST WHEN THE OTHER DOGS WENT SOUTH THOUGHT MAYBE HE WAS ON A BACKTRACK HE WAS ON ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE THREE OTHERS WERE ON THE OPPSITE SIDE AND THERE WAS ABOUT A MILE IN BETWEEN. THE REST OF THE GANG WENT TO THE PACK AND I WALKED IN TO HIM. WHEN I BEEPED HIM HE WAS STAYING STILL AND WHEN I GOT TO HIM HE HAD A CUB TREED. WHEN I WALKED OUT WITH HIM HE WAS TIRED BUT WASN'T LIMPING AND WASNT WHINING, AND WHEN I WENT TO WORK HE WAS SITTING AT THE KENNEL DOOR,AS I WENT TO LEAVE HE WALKED OVER AND HOPPED IN HIS DOG HOUSE SO I WAS PRETTY HAPPY. I CALLED MY DAD ADMITTED DEFEAT HE ALWAYS TOLD ME LISTEN TO UR DOGS THEY WILL TELL U THE STORY THEN I GOT SOME RIBBING FOR NOT BELIEVING MY HOUND WHEN HE TOLD ME THERE WAS A BEAR THE WAY HE WENT AND HE HASN'T LIED TO ME ABOUT IT BEFORE.

he's current on all his shots and I hose him down every 2 weeks with flea and tick shampoo honestly ive checked and found one tick crawling on him. when I talked to my vet I brought that up because i'm a little paranoid about lymes disease I had it twice in the last year last fall and the end of this spring high powered antibiotics worked doctor said I caught it in time 72 hours is the time to catch it in. but the vet said him being only 10 months he would of had to get it this summer and the symptoms shouldn't be thier yet. he seems to be doing fine after his hunt friday I let him run around in the yard yesterday and he was fine so I believe the vitalife and food change did the trick. now getting him in shape for the long races is my new agenda. on days we don't hunt I'll walk him for while so he builds up even and isnt just pushing extreme or sitting in the yard.
