Where at in West Texas. A long the canadian river there is a healthy pop, there is also hogs near tucumcari, clayton and roswell new mexico, but in nm you need permission from the land owners as they are on private land.

West Texas

We will be just outside of Muleshoe, TX. My mother and father in law live in portales, NM right now but are moving to muleshoe. I have hunted coon and coyote with my hounds but never hunted hog. I wasnt sure what other type of game there is down that way. I know when we went down there was not much for trees so I would say the coon huntin is out. I seen a couple coyotes so maybe I could still run them. thought about maybe tryin to find a group to go with once in a while for hogs. I am goin to Missouri in a couple weeks to hog hunt off of my mule with some freinds that live down there. Basically just wondering I guess. Do you guys hunt with mules or other transportation? What type of dogs do you use?

Wow

We have bobcat up here. Have treed a couple of them in the last coup[le years, but not steady enough to think I got cat dogs. All of those sound fun to hunt. I like to see and listen to the hounds run. Dont necesarily have to shoot anything. It would be a blast just to go along and help with the hounds. Just to see it done. I guess when you are from Iowa and dont get to see any big game it makes a bigger deal out of it. Thanks for the response branch 505. I appriciate the information!! Do they hunt much during the summer or mainly winter and spring? I wont get there till the end of june beginning of july. Have to wait till the kids are out of school.

you can only hunt year round on private land in nm, but it gets so hot here that if you do hunt you must start early and call it quits at about 11 am.

What about the bears?

Where do you have to go to hunt them? How much do they normally weigh? What type of dogs do you use for them? What would a guy have to do to get some one to take him along just to see one treed?

New Mexico is the closest area with a hound bear season from where you live. Bears are like hogs they can range in size and color. I will be going out in the fall and you can tag along but I hunt in central and northern NM for bear so you would have to go quite a ways.

That would be awesome!!

How long are you normally gone when you go out? I know that leaves a lot up to circumstance but just an estimate. I cant even imagine what it would be like to see a bear up the tree instead of a coon. I dont really imagine it will matter how far I have to go unless it becomes a habit. Just like coon huntin wife never said a thing the first couple times then I started goin 5 to 6 nights a week and she was not a happy camper. I do appreciate the offer to tag along and see it though!!
