Nescience barking at night

Iv owned Hounds and dogs for most of my life , growing up on a farm we always had some kind of dog or hound running around or in a pin of some kind so im used to dogs barking and i know how to get up and let them know they need to shut up
but resently my old cur has been doing some night time barking he dosent normaly do. i am thinking there is one of two things going on there either is a stray dog plundering around my house at night or one of the nabors dogs is in heat, he has barked till hes almost lost his voice but the only time hes barking or atleast barking when he shouldent is at night when i need to sleep
iv had some very unplesesnt ideas about how to handle this and none of which bode well for his well being if you know what i mean, what do yawl do about Nescience barking other than a

I know you said OTHER than a collar, but I can assure you, if you get a bark collar, you'll wonder how you ever got along without one. Other than that, the only thing you can do is get up and correct him EVERY time he barks. Seems to me, if you let him get away with just a few barks, when you do correct him, he won't associate it with the barking. The collar gets him EVERY time. I've seen them on the classifieds here and coondawgs.com or ebay for as little as $25.00. And if the dog has ANY brains whatsoever, it won't affect his barking when hunting whatsoever.
