Whelping Question

I had my female AI on May 2nd she is huge. Due date was July 6. I can feel the pups but she is not milking up real good like normal for her this is her 5 litter. Never did the AI before. Took her temp tonight still at 101.5 it was 100 last night. Just got back from feeding and she ate. Their is sign of nesting in the box. I spoke to the vet that did the AI they are telling me no big deal. Give it a few days. She has always been right on the mark time wise. Is this normal for AI or is this somethng I should be concerned with ??? Thanks for the advise.

Troy,I wouldn't worry yet.She could have caught a couple days after the AI .Also 67 and 68 days are common too.63 days is just an average for gestation purposes for us humans to count.

AI on May 2nd at 63 days gestation puts her due on July 4th. Now semen can stay living in the female for 72 hours there for when you AI a female she may not have fully ovulated and released her eggs at the time of breeding her. If she fully ovulated 2 or 3 days later moves the whelping date 2 or 3 days. Sounds to me the timing of ovulation is off. Keep an eye on her and good luck, Danny G.

Whelping

A female dogs temp will drop to around 98 degrees befroe whelping. But this temperature drop can be missed no big deal. She will have a clear mucusy discharge. This will be her mucus plug getting ready to break. You will notice her nesting wich ou have already noticed. Most female dogs whelp between 65 and 68 days.If you notice her pushing for atleast to hours with no puppy get her to a vet.Just make sure you have all your whelping things ready. And when mother nature says it is time she will have them.

Yes I agree. When they go over the due date you have to remember that at not are the pups growing fast than they are the last few days so keep a close eye on her and if suspect any problems get her to the vet. Good luck!
