Craziest Thing You've Ever Traded On Or For

This dog jockey thread got me to thinking about all the things that have been traded for around here.
Some know the story of when I asked Cheyenne were his truck was (I assumed it broke down hunting) he told me it was tied in the back yard. I looked out the kitchen window and there stood a bluetick lol.
The hutch in my kitchen was in on a trade that also included a TV and a pleather (not leather) recliner, after years of looking at I finally burned!
Had one guy we traded with ever summer for a different weedeater. (Roger I need another one, what you got!)
That one reminds me - Copenhagen same guy lol.

I traded my truck for a dog and a $300 Subaru. Deal was only finished IF the Subaru got me home. Car only made it couple months but i hunted the dog for five years. It wasn't a blue dog tho so that changes everything....

Crazy Trade

I seen Ross Porter trade a dog that was worthless to Earl Spengler. Earl wouldn't believe that the dog was as bad as Ross said he was because of his superior pedigree. Earl wanted to know what Ross wanted and Ross said "a brush pile and a match".

I traded an older female for a fancy riding lawnmower once. The dog died several years later but I still have the lawnmower.

I traded a dog for a Ruger 10/22 with a fancy $300 scope on it and 2 pistols. I sold the pistols but I still have the rifle. I can pop a coon in his eyeball with it.

I traded a full size Bronco for an older male once. The guy drove the Bronco for 4 or 5 years. The dog died at my house 6 or 8 years later. His name was Mongo Red.

Dog

Way back in my early college days [ under graduate ] I got my first real coondog. She was a grade dog 4 years old, man raised from pup [ I knew him ] straight on coon. I did not have enough cash, so I traded a new Belgium Browning and a Colt Woodsman 22 pistol plus the cash difference for the dog. That was a lot of money then or now, but I was pleased with my trade, still am. She was a coondog and clean, no junk and accurate. I kept her until she died of old age. She was the reason that I refuse to hunt anything but a coondog. Probably the best deal I ever made. Lol. Dave

This ain't nothing crazy that I traded for but the story is for sure crazy and bad luck at its finest!!

I was in high school I had saved up for awhile and bought an Owens bottom storage box, not long after I found a dog I just had to have. I drove several hours to hunt with this dog and ended up trading off my big shiney dog box along with my quick track tracking outfit. I had to haul the dog home in the cab. THEN!!! The very next day the dog gets hit by a train!!!! The bad part is I was right there and seen it happen, then to add to it, the train did not kill the dog. So I rushed him to the emergency vet, they said the could save have but it would be $10,000 to amputate both back legs and put wheels on him, I explained to them this would not work in this dogs field of work and I had to put him down. So a day later I had no box, no tracker, no dog and a $540 vet bill. That's how I know I love coonhuntin cause all that didn't make me quit.

Man, that was a bad lick, but you are right. Glad you stuck to it, you are one shining example of our young hunters today. I am proud if you, your ethics, your hunting success and your character as a man. Dave

Dog traders

Took a Buddy of mine to the Mountains of Tennessee one day dog trading. When he came out the house that morning he looked like a Gypsy. At least one rings on every finger... his pockets full of pockets knives and who knows what else. Well, to make a long story short... he knew what he was doing. We came home with the sweetest little Walker gyp that I did my best to buy. You have just got to know who you are dealing with and what they like and you can trade anything... I'm a believer in that.

Back in the late 60's I had a German Shorthair Pointer I was attempting to coon hunt with. Well after finding out that wasn't going to work like I planned. I put the word out that I wanted to sell the dog so I could get a coon hound pup. Well, I had never met a dog trader before but got a call from one and the experience was unique. This guy just had to have this dog. There was not much selling on my part and he would call and call and offer just about everything he had or could get his hands on for this dog. I was amazed to meet this type of person early on in my coon hunting life. After a couple weeks he called and said he had a boat and motor and that interested me. It was a small maybe 12 foot aluminum john boat with an even smaller maybe 3 hp motor. The motor was very old and unique. I made the deal and had me a boat. A few days later my two Brother in Laws came over and saw the boat and motor as they heard I wanted to sell it, They liked the boat but when they looked at that tiny motor one said "What are we going to do with that"? The other one said heck I don't know but lets get it. We can mix drinks with it. Anyway I got my money to buy a coonhound pup.

Funny thing about that GSP dog was. It wasn't a bad hunter and it hated a coon. Back in those days of being young we liked to see the coon and the dogs wrestle around a little. First coon I showed the dog the coon grabbed it by the lip and just flipped the dog over on its side like someone bull dogging a steer. I had several funny and lasting memories dealing with that dog.

Had another experience with Dog Dealers that involved a buddy wanting to get a dog.
This was in 1981 and my buddy hunted English dogs. Well back then we read the American Cooner from front cover to back cover several times. We could be talking about a dog and from memory tell one another what page to look to find the dog or pedigree we were talking about. Those magazines were powerful.

Anyway he found an english dog up in VA for sale the he wanted to do the right thing and check out a few nights and then buy it if the dog suited him. We hoped into his truck and took off. We had a couple friends we were going to stay with that were about a hundred miles from where the dog was. We went to their house a couple days early and were just going to hunt with them until the time to try the dog we were going to see. Anyway we got to traveling around those mountains visiting our buddies friends and seeing dogs tied out all over the side of mountains. Beautiful dogs and I realized then how keeping one on a chain muscled it up. Anyway everyone we stopped to visit had a dog or two for sale. My buddy started buying them and I think we came back with 3 dogs. He spent all his money before we ever had a chance to hunt with the dog that was suppose to be good. Let me tell you that none of the dog he purchased and brought back were good. We just got to liking to many pretty dogs and didn't stay focused on our mission. LOL I think those mountain dog traders spotted us coming a long ways off. LOL

All Grand

Back in the 90's Chey had a very nice dog he called Joker out of a dog named Teller. The man that had Teller called our house one day while he was at work and he had what was supposed to be a nice dog out of Harry he wanted to trade and give $1,000. The all grand pedigree was a rarity and just beginning. I called him at work to tell him and he had me drive up there to make the trade. Nice dog, all grand pedigree and a 1,000 bucks what could go wrong lol. He knew the guy, should have known better, and he just lived about 45min from us. A $1,000 was alot of money when you have 3 little kids but he wouldn't have taken that for his dog. When I get there he shows me the ugliest, skinny dog with pointy head and horrible overbite. I did not want to leave ours there and come home with this thing but did as I was asked (I have learned alot since then) thought they could work it out. Mind you there were no cell phones or pics back then and I had no idea if Cheyenne had ever seen this dog before. If they were good he didn't care much about looks so home we came with dog and $. The moment Chey got home from work he was calling this man he wanted to trade back and would even give more to get his dog back. To late he said ours was all ready sold so he was stuck with parrot mouth as he called it. We found out shortly after that he had sold Joker to a man in Texas for $10,000 the day I took him there. So if you've ever heard of a dog named Joker that was studded out in Texas for a while the man who raised and trained him traded him for All Grand Parrot mouth who wasn't worth a nickle and a thousand dollars.
Not the craziest thing he had traded for but buy far the worst trade he has made.

When I was growing up there use to be a hillbilly auction a few miles North of Boone, Iowa at Elmer Watson's pond. People would come from miles away to trade hounds and other items. They always had a water race and treeing contest.

I had a half walker/bluetick hound that would bark 120 barks a minute and swim like a Lab, but he wouldn't hunt a lick. I was 14 years old and took him out to the auction on my Honda Moped. I drove the 10 miles and led him beside me. (I was tired of feeding him if he would not go hunting.)

When my father got home for work he went to do chores and RANGER wasn't tied up out back. He came and asked me where my dog was. I told him I was tired of us feeding the no good son of a gun. So... I traded him at the hillbilly auction. Of course my father said, "YOU DID WHAT?"

I explained how Ranger and I made the trip to the pond. I went into detail about how I won the water race and treeing contest and a man wanted my dog, but when I told him the truth about him not hunting a lick he changed his mind. At the end of the day I found the man and explained that I didn't want to take him home and I was willing to deal.

All the man had was some other no good dogs that I didn't want. So, he asked me what I would take for him. I told him that I wanted three rabbits from another guy at the hillbilly sale. So, Mr. Grady from Fort Dodge Iowa walked over, bought the three rabbits and took my dog.

I came home with three rabbits for my hound.....!!!!

I really don't think of this as a trade as much as it was payment. When I was about 12-13 yrs old a guy in high school would ask me to trail red fox. He would try to set up on the fox to get a shot at it. Now most of the time this was an all day affair. He would pay me a quart of his dad's home-made canned hot pickles.

Man those were some god pickles! Problem was I usually was so hungry by then the pickles never made it home.
