Price these items 30 or more years ago:

Sheetrock
Lumber
Metal
Gasoline
Diesel
Milk
Coca-Cola
Automobiles
Tractors
Minimum Wage
Concrete

And then get a rough price of what corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat, and any type of forage crop was 30 years ago.

Yes prices on everything has gone up but guess what? Up until recently crop prices were the only thing that were still bringing relatively the same prices they were 30 or at some times 50 years ago. The population of this country is more now than then but yet crop prices are just now starting to get a FRACTION of what they should be compared to everything else in the world.

I **** sure rather give $5 a bushell or more for corn from a farmer in the midwest, than I would to give $4 a gallon for gas to some camel jockey in the middle east.



..........and I wouldnt care if he spent those 7 off months in Cancun because of it.........although Ive never met a farmer yet that could manage more than a few off days a year.

Don't ever complain about farmers with your mouth full! Not all farmers get government subsidies. You go out an invest a million bucks in a piece of land and some equipment and work your tail off without insurance and retirement accounts and see how long you make it. Next time you want to go hunting, don't ask this farmer for permission to hunt on my land.

if you think the farmer is making a big profit your sadly mistaken
it's the grain brokers and dealers that make more off a bushel of grain than the farmer who grows it'
our local milk price has gone up to the same price as a gallon of gas and it's once again the milk dealers that are making these big raises.
what a bunch of bull this making fuel out of grain is all it did was raise the price of grain thus causing the meat producers more cost to raise there animals wait till you see what meats going to cost and once again the producers aren't the ones making the big profits.
sure these big farms are getting hugh subsidies but there not true farmers there people with money who invest in farming just for the profits thru subsidies.,there not your farm families that eek out a living working the soil where the whole family toils just to make a living through hard work sweat and tears.
bt the way welfare such as foodstamps come out of the farm subsidies prograg and eat more out of the budjet than true farm subsidies

What does a T-bone cost now a days. I know for darn sure that we can sell a beef steer up here that weighs in over 1300 lbs and get 80 cents a pound if your lucky. Now think how many steaks you get off that sucker. Go to a fancy resturant. You can spend $20 bucks easy on a steak. Doesn't seem to work out quite right. lol. We've been dairy farmers since i was born and my mom and dad tell me that milk prices weren't much lower back when they got married 30 years ago then they are today. So don't tell me the farmers have it made. No days off and thats the darn truth. No extra pay for holidays, or paid vacation. No unemployment pay either. It's not an easy way of life thats for sure. But all that said I wouldn't change it for the world. I love being a country boy!

look at the link above and tell me how bad these guys have it some of the top guys in my county receive over 90,000 dollars a year in free subsidies. I don't know about some of you but I think I could live on my current wages plus $90,000

wakenda, keep in mind those subsidies help the farmers compete against the foreign government owned farms in Brazil and other places.

Last year was the first year in a long time dad made a profit. He has worked part time since selling the cattle. Lately he has been traveling to turkey trying to develop foreign industry.

He is pretty busy though farming 2,000 acres on his own.

I usually don't respond to post like yours, but I can't keep the ol mouth shut this time. Now I no what I am talking about, yes some get good checks, but if you like the sub checks then by all means go on down and buy you some equipment to start farming. Then if you can afford to actually plant anything after that then have at it and kick back after 5 months. The whole reason for high food cost is fuel prices. But if you wish for US farmers to quit then we can get it all from overseas. That has worked real well with gas hasn't it.

I can't believe i just read that!! what kind of farmer works 5 months out of the year? I live in the midwest and i don't know a farmer that has any spare time!! apparently you dont work on a farm or you would know... farmers don't work an eight to five job like a lot of people, they work from an hour before light to at least an hour or two after dark most times of the year... And most of them dont do it for the money, (or they wouldnt do it), so i don't see why your complaining, when farmers are the ones who grow the food you eat.

you can read alot of these post and tell who is or has farmed or ranched. the ones that havent have no idea what it takes to farm or ranch. equipment last forever never needs any maintaining and dont use any fuel. before you point fingers at farmers look at the fuel pump next time you fill up your ride and see if you can figure out what is makeing things go up in price.

I am a farmer, my cost have risened 84% in the last yr. Corn seed around here went from $55 /bag to $120/bag, fertilizer went from $200/ton to $500 /ton and riseing everyday. Chemical went from $45/gal to $95/gal, disel went from $1.50/gal to $4/gal and riseing everyday.
I am going out of business, not growing anything but some feed corn for my animals and a garden to help feed my family. Brokers, investors in feed stuffs and oil are getting rich my friend not the farmers.
I might have to go back and start makeing shine get a heck of alot more for your product than filling a hawg,or cows belly. I dont get a check from the govement, see my bank account when tax time comes, I am broke , quiting , fedup, I QUIT!!!!

well im a dairy farmer and if it wasnt for the help from the gov. there wouldnt b any milk n the stores bc when u spend every thing u get on the feed it takes 2 get it then there is nothin 2 pay the rest of the bills with. plus u have 2 work 7 days a week no matter what the weather is like or anything else

Anybody who thinks the farmer is doing great these days are sadly mistaken. One of the biggest reasons beef is so high is the fact that the cattle just aint out there. Compared to 20 years ago, we aint got any cattle. I own a cow truck that hauls cattle to feedlots in Neb. Texas, Kansas, Ok. and New Mexico. I promise u its nothing like it was. The reason for that is farmers just couldnt make it anymore. Had to sell out and take jobs in favtories or whatever they could to feed their family. Corns high for the same reason. Weve been behind the last 3 or 4 years where I live of rain. Crops havent made. U see a farmer really workin the way a farm should, run up to him and hug his neck.

Guys I guess that what I meant doesn't read the way I intended it. I know that the smaller farmers depend on the subsidies to keep going. I understand that costs have risen. I just that the system is broken (like most are) when large operations get large sums of money and are not shy about saying that I made too much I have to buy new equipment every 2 years so that I don't mess up my government checks. Now I just don't see where that what was the intent of the program. Please don't be offended that is just an opinion

the problem with our country is we in general are 5 generations removed from the farm and the public dosen't know what it takes to raise there food WHAT WE NEED IS FOR SOME PEOPLE TO GO HUNGRY FOR A FEW DAYS to reilize how important the farmers are i work for a ag company as a sales manager and we also farm our input cost just to grow corn this year is up 33 percent not giving me a raise or my dad a raise this doest not include land rent doubling around where i live we own all of our land fuel price is way up from last year fertilizer tripled from last year.i am scared to say but i only think it will get worse before better the feed lots are not filling there lots because corn is to high to feed what is going to happen in 2 years the little or independentt hog farmers are all going out the market will be controled by the big corporate companies then lets see what will happen.if you think everyone that farms is in it for the money and the gov programs you are sadly mistaken,if you think i'm wrong go buy says 300 hundred acre at 3000 to 5000 per acre then spend a half million dollars on equipment then hope you can get it planed, that it rains, that it dosen't freeze, that we don;t get a storm and damage it and that the price dosen't crash by the time you harvest it, then tell me if we are getting rich. hold on they say oil may go to 150 a barrel if this happens i don't even want to think what will happen only people my grandmas age have experenced that and she is 94 it's starting to get scarry thank you

I grew up on a farm and we would have steak and roast beef about 2-3 times a week. Doesn't mean we were rich, we just raised our own!

Mom and Dad had dairy cows in the 1960's. At the end of a year, mom, who kept the books, totaled it all up and figured they made $100 profit for the year. Dad said, " I can think of better ways to make $100!" So, they sold the dairy heard and diversified by having laying hens, selling the eggs, raising hogs, selling grain, and doing custom combining. Glad they got rid of the cows before I came along. That is definately a 24/7/365 job. No vacation, if you get sick, too bad, the cows won't wait for you to feel better, you gotta milk them anyway.

One more thing: farming is about the only industry where you buy retail and sell wholesale(what's wrong with that picture?!)

I was talking to a farmer the other day and his fuel costs to run one tractor were over $1000 a day. The subsidies are not making much of a dent in the expenses a farmer has.

I'm not big on subsidies for non production but if you look at the big picture, its been the government thats kept food prices CHEAP for decades, at the expense of farmers. So, the way I see it, the government is giving a little back.

Smaller farmers have been getting squeezed out for years. I know, I was one of them. Someday, folks, we will pay the price for that. Bigger companies get involved and I guarantee food prices will go up.

Just imagine if food prices started climbing the way gas prices have?
