Weirdest Thing you ever seen in a tree........

Fellers,

In about 25 years of hunting and the countless trees I have treed on....I had a first last night.

Pup just falls treed on a den. Top is clear out of it, holes in it every where. It's used alot and is common to tree on it. So when he trees, I know exactly where he is and what he is on.

I walk in and I always shine the tree anyhow just to see if the coon happened to be enjoying a nice evening on the outside. I step back throw the light up...nope not outside....WAIT A MINUTE...what the heck is THAT?

A BUZZARD is roosted on a branch...right next to the hole of that tree. He's obviously used it a while as HIS white markings are all down the side of that tree.

I wondered if he thought something was dead in the den and trying to get in or if there might be kittens in there and he was waiting for them to come out or go in after them......

What's the "weirdest thing" you ever seen in a tree your dog was on?

Actually I have two things I considered weired. Years ago (on my own property) I shined a tree and found a skillet about 12ft up. You could tell it had been there a very long time and somone had used it for target practice. It looked like it was cast iron but don't really know. I had hunted those woods for 25 years and never saw it before. Secondly in the middle of about 1200 acres, I was shining and saw something white. Pulled out the spotlight and looked through the scope on the .22 to see what it was. A SHOE. Have no idea how it got there, but in the early 90's I was part of a search and rescue for pilot whose small plane crashed on my land. Everyone that I asked that was part of it can not remember if he had shoes on, or what kind when he was found.

tree

I treed a fish in the first fork of a tree this kill season. Took me a while to figure out what I was looking at but it was definately a fish. No holes in the tree and no coon but the dog treed a fish.

At a parking spot where I park to walk in in the woods because the road is gated to vehicles, I saw a deer up in the branches of the tree. Leaves were off the tree so as I was driving up, I could see a big shawdow of something in the tree.

It was high enough up there that someone would had a fun time getting it up there for what ever reason I haven't even a clue.

Fish

Christy I was hoping a coon took the fish up the tree. May have been a hawk. My father in law was with me and all we could do was laugh about.

Twice Ive seen dogs tree mink, both times the "tree" was about the size of your wrist and less than 10 feet high.

Used to be a dog around here named Ugly that treed every turkey in the woods. Lots of times dogs will get treed with turkeys in the tree when the poults start roosting though because the coon climb up and kill the poults.

Dogs ran a fast race to a tree with an Eagle or Osprey's nest in it one night. I climbed up to get a closer look but the nest was old and abandoned. No coon there either. Not sure what they ran into that tree.

Had my Pride dog tree up a sumac bush one night in a hunt and had a kitten coon not much bigger than your hand in it. Didnt look big enough to even be out of the nest. He could of grabbed it anytime he wanted too.

Had a pup tree an owl one night.

Ferrari's Dolly pup treed pack rats three times. Once in a tree, once in a nest on the ground, and once in a hollow log.

Treed housecats 2 different times miles from the nearest house.

Also something else weird about that BUZZARD last night. My dad and grandpa always told me if you mess with a Buzzard and get them excited they would "puke" on you. Kind of like a defense they use. When I went to snap the leash on the dog after seeing that buzzard, there on the ground beside him were a couple pieces of raw meat about the size of a golf ball. After leashing him and stepping back a bit...he of course wanted to roll in it.

I think that buzzard did try to puke on the pup. All this time I thought they were pulling my leg!

How about!

along with a coon was a steel belted radial tire! There was also insulation, 2X4 studs and sheet metal in the trees around me too.Yes my dog got out of pocket. I was down around Arcanum,Ohio a month after the tornado went through. about 1992 if I remember right!

I have posted about this before. Several years ago, I was hunting with Adam O'Donnell down by his house south of Perry. He was hunting this dog named Gus (I think) and I was probably hunting driver or his mother Dolly. It was a cold winter nights and the snow was pretty deep as I recall, and it took us a while to work yourselves to the tree. The first big branch had a fox squirrel sitting near the tree trunk. The next large branch directly above the squirrel had a turkey sitting on it. Then directly above the turkey was another large branch that had a coon sitting on it. I swear you could just about take a bowling ball straight above the coon and drop it taking out the coon, turkey and squirrel!

We did shoot the coon out, and Adam was disappointed that the coon rolled out missing the turkey. He was hoping the coon would take out the turkey on the way down.lol
