What kind of mouth

What kind of mouth do you like to have on your hound when cold tracking and why.

I guess I should have broke it down on bear or cats.

Hope ya don't mind hellcat but I thought this would be a good Poll if it hasn't been done before.

I voted " open all the way " , but I'm like Sam. I like for them to drift it out and open every time they hit the track and not in the same place twice.

Good Poll Bud !!!!!!!!!

I wish that I had thought of this one<LOL>
I would like to clarify what I call being Wide open on a Cold track. If the dog is moving forward and making progress, I like for them to be telling me about it. On the other hand if they a working to figure that track or making sure they are going in the right direction Then I would rather they think more and bark less. If they make a loose I want them to shut up and figure it out then go back to opening. To me this is a wide open dog. The next guy might define it differently
I like a wide open dog If wide open is as I have dercribbed

while i don't hunt bear or cats(i do hogs), i like a dead silent dog. for me all that extra barking isn't neccessary. i want to know when you are looking at the hog. our hogs break when they hear a dog bark. if you have a fast track dog and they can top a hog then open is fine, but those are really hard to find. my game doesn't tree, it runs like heck and it turns and fights, then runs again..lol..

I have had dogs that were fully open on Lion, and Bobcat. But when it came to running bears, they were tighter on the mouth. I believe it is because they are running so hard, they don't waste the time on barking, and are running to catch. They still open once in a while, but I find it is easier to tell what they are doing. If they are only hitting occasionally, they are going hard to catch. When they catch up, they open more and a bayup or tree, they really make noise.

I like my hound to use just enough mouth to let me know where they are going, seem to get up on their game more, and I dont want a hound with a houndy mouth, more of a yard dog bark, can hear it better when they are in there a mile in a big cedar swamp and the wind is blowing. Hows those pups coming along, Ive got a place aall made up for mine here in Michigan.

Hey Dan,
Pups are doing great, they are just over three weeks old now and already been eating softened food for a week. Three are climbing out of the whelping box regularly, which the door is a foot high. I'll get some pictures out to ya tomorrow. How is the snow up there for ya, crusty-er than hell here.
