Gravel For Kennel Floors

We are getting the ground ready for our new kennels. Concrete floors are not an option at this time so we will be using gravel. Just needing some info from folks that use gravel of some sort for the floor of their kennels. What size and type of gravel? How deep do you start out with? Do you do any other preparation like a perimeter footing? Framing? Do you have a problem with dogs digging in it? I need some general info from ones that have used gravel in their kennels. Pro & Cons.

Thanks, Sabrina

I use gravel in my kennel. I dug the dirt out about 5-6 inches below the kennel bottom, then filled with gravel back to ground level. never dug any holes at all. After a while it gets hard as concrete once its packed.

Dig it out and lay down some wire or hog/cattle panels on the bottom. That should prevent anything from digging out. Then lay down your rock and mix in some barn lime. Almost as good as concrete.

Put a treated 1x4 around the bottom of the kennel, lay down cattle panels and fill with pea gravel. Its easy to clean and stays dry.

gravel

our kennel has gravel runs also. We use just a straight bank run, with everything from sand to rocks about 1 1/2" in diameter in it. Packs as hard as concrete, but allows the water to seep out of the kennel. Had a little trouble with digging when we first put it in, but once it fully settled, havent had a problem. Our gravel is about 18" deep, but that was just so we could level the runs with the rest of the yard, i am sure less would be more than effective.

Sabrina, I use Pea Gravel. We just laid chain link on the ground and then put our kennels on top of it. Then we put boards on the inside of the kennels, but on the outside edges...didnt matter if the gravel moved from one kennel to the next. We then filled it about 4 inches deep. I use a stall pick for horses to scoop poop. I'm moving in about 2 weeks and am going to use this same set up for now cause I cant afford concrete..lol. Only thing I have noticed is the gravel will shift, and sink in the ground, so if I was to stay here this spring I would need to add more. I've had 2 different dogs dig the gravel, but they quit when they hit the chain link. Hope this helps! I can get pea gravel here for $7.00 a ton and it took 5 ton for my 3 kennels and a big ol puppy run. Gravel keeps the smell down too..cause it works as a big septic system basically. -Ryann

Hi Ryann, How ya doin?

Yep, I like the suggestions of the wire being put down under the gravel. Mine have never dug to get out, but a couple of them just like to dig. I guess they are digging for moles or something. Just drives me crazy to go out after a rain and have a pond in the kennel.

So some of the gravel or gravel mixes will harden up and some just stay loose? I guess the mixed gravel that hardens would be better to keep the digging down.

yeah the gravel mix, "bank run" that we use has all sizes of gravel and sand, with a little clay, and after a day with no moisture, the kennel is as hard as concrete.

Doing real good Sabrina, how are you? I'm ready to move and get away from these crazy neighbors! My hounds have never dug to get out, just dig to be diggin I guess..lol. Hard to tell. I'd say having a gravel that will harden up would be better, but I've heard concrete is hard on show dogs feet...but I dunno. I am gonna put my welping pens indoors on concrete when I move and then well I dunno how I'm gonna do my runs yet..lol. I wont be able to do anything until 45 days after closing cause the guy has that long to clean out the buildings outside. I guess until then I'll just use these kennels I have and put down wire and leave it..lol. I'm not gonna buy gravel twice! I also used those horse stall mats when I got my first kennel, but they are expensive. Wasnt much diff then concete, but my ground was unlevel and I had water puddles when it rained. So I switched to the gravel and put them stall mats in front of the kennel so it doesnt get muddy where I walk..lol.

I use about 2-3 inchs of sand.

Haven't had to much trouble with it working out of the pen, but I have a young dog that likes to dig, so I laid wire cattle panels next to the fence & that has stopped that. I also got one of those plastic manure forks that horse people use. It's about 15 inchs wide with the tines about an inch apart & it makes picking up dog poop a breeze, the sand falls through & all you get is the dog poop.

Another thing that I like about sand is when it gets real hot, I will spray it down with water & the dogs like to lay on the wet sand, & it keeps them cooler.
