Jacob....I would think, seeing as there is a such thing as a senior's class, that you could put youths together. BUT, I'd also tend to think they'd have to hunt by regular rules seeing as they are in a regular Nite Hunt, not a Youth Event.(Youth rules are slightly differant) Then again, I could be totally wrong....

How about it Allen, this is as a good question.

Casts must be drawn out before the hunt, so I would imagine if the youth are hunting a UKC event they would fall under those rules and be drawn from the majority. Also it would depend on the title's of the dogs that are being hunted (i.e. GrNite, NiteCh, and Reg class).

It would just have to be the luck of the draw that the kids draw out together if it's not a UKC youth event.

The rules state that youths 13 years of age and under must be accompanied by a non hunting adult. That could be a problem for clubs to furnish. The rule is located on page 56 of the 2007/2008 rule book.

I don't see where a non hunting adult would be a problem. This is where pkc has an advantage over ukc for youth.Would be nice to be able to draw out a youth cast if enough in the same class where there to hunt.In the seinor class dogs have to be in the same class don't thay?My kids would rather win a $10 ukc trophy than the $20 to $30 pkc money.

WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT , MY KIDS ARE ALMOST READY TO QUIT GOING . WE WENT FROM THEY WOULD HAVE THE DOGS LOADED , EQUIPMENT READY , IN THE TRUCK AND READY TO GO WHEN I GOT HOME ..... TO I HAVE TO BEG THEM TO GO NOW ... NOT ANYBODYS FAULT ... ITS JUST NOT ALOT OF FUN FOR THEM ...... IF THEY SPECTATE THEY CAN'T SHINE , CAN'T SPEAK CAN'T ROLL ON THE GROUND OR KICK A HALF ROTTEN TREE OVER ... THATS NO FUN ...... OR IF I SPECTATE AND LET ONE OF THEM HANDLE THATS NOT HARDLY FAIR I HAVE FOUR KIDS ...... THEN IF I DO THAT ... ITS HARD FOR ME TO WATCH A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD KID COMPETE AGAINST A GROWN MAN ....... SO WHY NOT U.K.C. ???? IF THERES ENOUGH YOUTH AT A CLUB IN A CERTAIN AGE BRACKET DRAW OUT A YOUTH CAST AND SUPPLY A NON-HUNTING JUDGE ..... THEN THEY CAN LEARN AND HAVE FUN AT THE SAME TIME ........... DERICK

Jacob, any youth at a regular UKC event would draw out with everyone else. We do have the UKC Youth Coonhound Series that are hosted by the Breed and State Associations where it's youth only. Also, the new YEP program is "Youth Only".

I agree Derrick!!

Nothing more honest and refreshing than being in a cast with youth. My funnest hunt last yr was when I was the only one old enough to drive!!! 14yr old kid won the cast and put a first on his female!! Im 33 and I laughed my but off all night!!

I agree it wouldnt take but 1-2 bad casts to turn the youth against the sport!!!

THANKS , , THE LOCAL CLUBS WOULD BENEFIT TREMENDOUSLY IF THIS COULD HAPPEN , AFTER ALL HOW MANY COMPETITION HUNTERS HAVE KIDS AND KIDS THAT HAVE FRIENDS THAT WOULD LOVE TO COMPETE IF THE PLAYING FIELD WOULD BE MORE FAIR AND FUN FOR THE YOUTH . KIDS DRAW OUT TOGETHER , COMPETE TOGETHER , BECOME THE BEST OF FRIENDS TOGETHER AND STAY INVOLVED IN THE LOCAL CLUBS WILL GIVE BACK TO THE CLUB SOONER OR LATTER ... I GUARANTEE IT

It only seems fair that they can request 'youth only' exscpecially if it's ok for the seniors to request a seniors cast. Of course, the parent/guardian would have to be willing to go along. The 'senior' men like to keep it an even playing field and not always want to run around with those 'wippersnappers'....well, those same 'wippersnappers' don't always want to run around with the old fellas.
This would be a fantastic idea...how about it UKC!?! Any chance we can get it changed for the '08 season?

i agree with the way it is now. Unless its a youth hunt, then the youth should have to hunt with everyone else. It gives them a good learning experince becuase there not always gonna draw out with kids. makes them take responsibility and handle properly if they really want to win.

I argued with UKC til I was blue about this 2 years ago. We wanted to put youth cast with one of our state assoc hunts and was told no. The only reason they could give against it was that it would decrease entries because they would have to have a non hunting guide and judge and they also had to be accompanied by an adult. I really dont care if it decreased the overall entry as long as these youth are getting exposed to our sport. I would rather see a hunt that had 12 dogs and 8 of them hunted by youth than see 16 dogs and 0 of them hunted by a youth because they dont feel that they can compoete with the adults. JMO

The way I see it if you can have a (old farts) cast you should be able to have a youth cast.

PKC dont have youth casts either at regular hunts. Codi Perdue. a youth hunter, won right at $3,000 dollars in open events in 2006. She was also one of the leading handlers in the nation in 2006. She also got in the final 4 at the Rend Lake Classic the same year. She won about $1,600 in 2007. The youth race winner in 2007 won over $3,300. The top 13 youth handlers won over $1,000 each in 2007. They did this at regular open events against grown men.Just look at ur youthstandings in Prohound. Alot of these youth are better handlers than grown men. Peighton Roberson always does a heck of a job handling when I draw him. I think they should leave it as is. You always learn more by trying to beat those that are better than you, not by beating those you should beat.

Exactly. I don't think I've ever seen a seniors cast at a regular hunt but at least the possibility exists.

PKC does allow for youth casts at regular hunts. I'd have to read the rules to brush up for sure but basically if a cast of youth hunters can be put together, they can have one.

I there are a lot of youth handlers that hunt open but at most open PKC hunts if there are 4 youth you can have a youth cast.Jerrett Combs wins his fair share of open casts but if there where 3 other youths at a hunt he would have the option of hunting in a youth cast.We are losing hunters at thease events & I think if UKC can let seinors have the option of hunting together the youth should have the same option.

In PKC if you can make a cast with youth, you can request a youth cast just like if you have enough puppies at an OE, you can request a puppy cast.
I do like the way UKC has implemented some youth programs in the last couple of years. I look at it 2 different ways. I think it might be a good thing if the possibility exists to have a youth cast, but growing up I hunted a lot of comp hunts when I was a youth. I always enjoyed hunting against the adults. I learned a lot, and I had a lot of fun. I won my share against those adults and beat some big name people too. Those are some of my best memories at the hunts. There are more good people at these hunts than there are bad. I know I enjoy having a youth on a cast that I'm on...For those 2 hrs, I might be able to teach some things I have learned when I was a youth, and it wasn't that long ago. In my personal opinion, if I was a youth, I would rather hunt with the adults.

Youth Cast

I'm all for having youth cast, but I don't think that a youth cast should have an effect on the overall outcome of the hunt or getting tittles for dogs. I have been on many youth cast as a spectator and seen how a lot of the handling was done by parents. I have been on many youth cast where there were youngsters that were great handlers and did an excellent job of calling and handling there dogs. My son has been hunting in competition since he was 12 years old, he is now 19 and he would much rather hunt with the men than in a youth cast. I think that the youth cast should be used as a teaching training aid and once they know the rules and there dogs, jump in there with the old timers and show them how it's done. Please don't think I have anything against the youth, they are the only reason I'm i this business.

There is one major problem with special casts at club level events, whether it be senior casts or youth casts. It can basicly wipeout the random draw that is the backbone of having a fair draw. Say your club draws 15 registered dogs which is a good average entry for a club level event. You take out 4 seniors, 4 youth hunters and you only got 7 left for the random draw. And if a couple of those entries are from mutiple dog owners, you have to split those dogs up and now you are at the point where you are no longer drawing casts, you are making them up.

Everybody is always saying these hunts are all about the dogs until it comes time to draw casts, then it is all about getting your dog into your chosen cast.
At major events it can probably all be worked out fine but at the club level, everybody should have their dog drawn from the same pot.
