wide strait line find 3 or 4 farms over alot of times. meduim strike in hearing always. close almost have to walk in thin coons

I'm not a big fan of straight line runners. They miss to much ground. If I wanted to hunt a timber 2 miles down the road I would have turned out there to begin with.

yeah, what them other two said......... medium to close for me, I want to hear my dog strike then listen to a race to the tree (uhm.. how sweeeet)..... if he/she trails out of hearing thats fine, but I want to know what direction my dog is headed without having to drag out the tracker to find out where she went.....

A close to medium hunter would be nice in my area,but you wouldn't tree many coon. Alot of hunting pressure push the coons deep and a dog must at least hunt 45 to 60 min and that is a minimum in my book. We turned loose the other night and one of our dogs was gone for 1hr and 50 min before he struck deep, when he finished he had the coon. I don't always love the walking or driving around but love the results. But I will say this I like a dog to make Big, big, circles.

I think a dog can go to far and not needed. They will miss alot of coon Id say. Hunt an area and if nothings strikes move to another.

To be truthful, I like a dog to be able to strike, run and tree a coon within hearing range. But, with thin coon around here thats asking too much. Some of the areas I hunt are pretty big and you could walk all night and not hit a road. Wide hunters are nice if they'll show you more coon, but I despise a hound that hunts deep when there's no need to! If there are coon in a swamp or corn field you turn lose on, dont end up 2 mils away and still hunting! I guess I want a hound that really wants to find a coon for you! Checks all the likely areas first, and then thoroughly combs out until they find a track to run. Stay downwind knowing thats how they'll find scent. To me, distance isn't as important as time. Since I can only hunt so late, it would be nice for them to come back in say 30 minutes..even an hour if they cant find something. I'll gladly drive them to another piece to look again. So what do I like? I guess I like coondogs, and neither dogs that are afraid of getting out from under your feet or needlessly hard hunting fools.

Yes go as far as they need to what-ever that is. Mine will be treed out of hearing distance sometimes and I have to use a tracker to find out the direction they are. But no strait liners for me either. I do not like that style dog!

Mine will go as far as she has to most nights, she will unt the woods that you drop her in, but if she doesn't get treed there she will go on to the next and the next and so on if needed. As my hunting buddies say " OH CRAP, Its the SUE SHOW", get out the walking shoes.

30-45 min. straight up the creek or river when im in a
corn field straight around the outside.the idiots out in
the middle dont know where the trees are.dog with a
meduim nose that can smell 1/4 mile on either side of
the creek so thats what 2miles deep,1/2 mile wide
anything else is out of the pocket.

I think a lot of what hunters are looking for in terms of how a dog hunts has to do with how the hunters hunt. I like a dog that hunts close to medium but I am a hunter that when I start my dog up a holler or around a lake or river I get out of the truck and start in the direction the dog is going. However I am one of the few who hunts like this around here. Most hunters around here want a dog that when it is turned loose it goes until it gets treed no matter how far that may be. They are the kind of hunters that turn the dogs loose and set in the truck a few minutes then get out the tracker and start driving around trying to find them.In my opinion a lot of wide hunting dogs are just dogs that pass up a lot of coon. I am not in thick coon in my area and I tree plenty coon with a close to medium hunting dog. I would rather have a dog come back to me and let me take him and recast him in another place to get a coon than have the dog just go on and on and on by himself.

The Close Hunting Hound, is my preference, the reason, or reasons for this decision, is that with this type of Hound, you can hunt where you want to, Dont have as much danger of them getting run over, or lost, and personally I feel that you will Kill More Coons with this type of hound, as you wont have to spend as much time, walking back to the truck with them on a leash.

If I only pleasure hunted I'd say I would prefer a close hunting hound. But for a competition dog I want them to WORK OUT as far as they have to go to find a coon. No straight liners though. I voted for the wide ranging hound and that is what I have, but they'll tree that coon thats close too. Not just fire in to the middle of the block, then start hunting.

Imop , it depends on where i am,if i am in a river bottom,id prefer my hound to hunt close, but on a creek branch he needs to hunt out the branch, and come back to me, not cross three hills and four Hwys two countys lol, but comon sence tells me every dog is diffrent you cant have it both ways most of the time if the dog has coon on his mind he will hunt as far as he has to go untill he strikes, depending on his Nose, Nancy wouldent hunt as far as Joe Would but Joe had a better nose than she did most of the time , Lucy would hunt as far as she had to go , and most of the time you got her under a tree some place, and if that was a mile from where you cast her oh well thats where she would be treed. I didnt really care for that but thats how she was . she would have a coon 99% of the time also
