Any Old School Mechanics Out There?

I have an 86 full size chevy hunting truck and none of the gauges work. That is not a problem because I dont need them in this truck but I would like to find a way that I could rig up a gas gauge for little to no money. I am not a great mechanic but can do a little and have no ideal how to rig up a gas gauge. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Robbie Spears

What you need to do find out if it is the guage or the sender by grounding out the sender then the guage will read full. If not the sender ( float ) is bad. Then you know your wireing is okay or not also. If that is the case you can order you from jegs or Jc whitney. But you will need to know how many ohms your sener is so that it will read corectly to your guage.
May get lucky only offer one my sons jeep offers 3 so had to drop the tank access the sender and move it up all the way and then to empty to get the ohms reading so we could get the corect one.

Since none of the gauges work. I would suspect that it is the gauge cluster. I would poke around a junk yard and find another guage set to plug in there. Just make sure it is exactly the same as the one you have and it will be just plug and play from there. Otherwise you could order just a fuel gauge from somewhere like Summit.

Many of the trucks had a circuit breaker that could fail. I would look for that right away. They used to be part of the dash cluster.

Have you checked the fuse? Since the whole guage cluster is out I would look for the fuse or a wire connection.

I would check for a bad fuse or a crcked or broken wire. You also have a bad ground somewhere. My nephews tbird just had the same problem with the fuel gauge. He ended up finding out it was a bad ground.

LOL I know how that is, I had someone come and tow my jeep to his garage to fix it when it quit on me in the woods! I was embarassed when he told me he put some gas in it and fixed it. Lucky for me it was my brother!

Personally I think he should take it to someone who has the proper tools and knows how to test wiring and guages and will only replace what is needed!

That would be the least expensive. Butchering the truck will cost more than the repair.
