Silent Dog Question

Hubby's frustrated... he's got his redbone girl tracking and treeing on her own now but she's silent on tree. She tracks with this hilarious yoddle... but then goes quiet when she finds the tree. You have to be real close or track her to find her, but when you do she's there running circles around the base of the tree. She stays put, and has the meat, but can't competition hunt a silent dog.

These last few days have been the first times she has completely tracked, treed, and had the meat by herself. She turned 2 yr. last week, but didn't start in the woods until last fall. Do we just give her more time? Put her together with a loud dog?

So, what to do?

here is what i would do first. ty her back shoot the coon out do not let her get it so ty her back as far as you can but still where she can see what is going on. if she barks at it hang it up let her tree it if she wont bark do not give it to her if she tree's it let her have it do this 7-8 times if she will not bark up after that look at culling her. there are a few more tricks that might work but that is my first thing to do.

You get rid of her at start over. I can't think of many things in the coondog world that would be more useless than a silent treedog.

She'll bawl her head of if it's on the ground. Really goes after it when it's shot down, takes pressure at the tree fine. Just don't bark once she'g got it up the tree.

Super fast dog, gorgeous girl who will finish GRCH in spring. This is her only hang up, and it's so hard to find all these good qualities in a redbone these days this dog will not be a cull. She's my husbands baby and you'd have better luck convincing him to cull some family members before this dog!

About to be out of town, but when he gets back going to take her out with a louder dog see if that helps. She's been singled out by herself lately so maybe having competition and hearing it will "fix" this.

Hey, I'm not trying to convince you to do anything! You ask the question "what to do". All those great qualities you mentioned are completely worthless if the dog won't bark treed. But yeah, try her with another dog. Keep working with her and she may get over it. Being at the tree with a good treedog might do the trick. I was just answering the question you asked based on the imfo you provided. And I really can't think of anything more useless than a treedog that don't bark treed.

Probably the most important lesson I have learned about training coondogs is knowing when to start over.

Just like The Kenny Rogers song, "You gotta know when to hold em' and know when to fold em"

I hunted one like that for awhile.

I ended up giving her back to the guy I got her from. He sent her to the Amish for awhile. Not sure what they did with her, but the original owner has her back now and she's a pretty nice dog. She splits alot and trees real nice. She made NiteCh pretty easily too. But, they tell me her mother was the same way....

I got a female from a guy one time that had the same problem. He thought she was the trouble on a tree one night with another dog and corrected the wrong dog to the point that she wouldn't bark up a tree anymore. I got her and took her by herself and kept fairly close to her and when she shut up I eased in that direction shutting out my light along the way and when she would wimper or bark a little I'd turn my light on and head toward her then repeat the process until she figured she had to bark before I'd go to her and reward her. Finished her out into Nt. Ch. in three straight hunts.

You said she has just started to put it all togather by herself.

Just a guess, but I would say she has it all figured out up to the barking treed part. Its different when there bayed, I know several who wont bark in a hole. Only dig. Old dogs, GRNTCH's.

Im betting with a few more coon up by herself she'll get the idea to bark treed. Encourage her when you get there, and dont shoot untill she barks. When she does, even a few barks at first, knock that sucker out. Make a fuss about it. Squall, shake vines, clap, hell bring along a marchin band ( ok stop short of that one)

Ive had several who took a few weeks to realy roll it over when they were first singled out. They would just sit there and locate now and then. Some that were fairly hard tree dogs with company.

Its a big step for some to go it alone. Especialy those who were hunted to death with a "puppy trainer" from the start. Some realy good ones think before they do, some idiots do before they think.

What i would do if i was in your situation is take a live trap catch a coon show it to her let her raise hell on it for 5 to 10 minutes (you can do this right in your yard) put her back in the kennel store the coon over night and repeat it the next day then on the 3rd day tie a rope on your live trap drag it right by her kennel drag it to a tree that she cant see and toss your rope over the lowest branch pull it up and tie it off release the dog let her bark him for 5-10 again do what ever you do to let her know she is doing a good thing now on day 4 I would take it to the edge of a field where the dog could run it to the timber now slap a leash on her now shoot your coon in the back hip 2-4 times until he starts to climb back down or falls out of the tree but dont kill him this last step to me is most important let the coon get some of her meat usualy a few good bites to the ears or lips will turn your dog in to a serious coon dog in my opinion.

I have one that could do it all right once he got the hang of it with another dog but when I singled him out alone he did the same thing and stayed at the tree. Like larrypoe said, get the dog wound up at the tree and since she stays she should come around. Mine started treeing on the third tree by himself. It sounds like he started her alone. That's looking for alot of natural ability.

Exactly whats wrong with most "lines" of dogs today.

You spend a couple months getting this dog to do what comes natural to most, breed her, and the people who buy the pups come on here wondering why they dont tree....round and round we go.....

I decided quite some time back that I am not wasting valuable time"fixing" dogs that don't do things naturally, even though I know how.

I got pretty good at training track dogs to tree when I was a kid because that's all we knew and all we had to work with.

There is no way I am going to do that now. Too many naturals out there.

I suppose if there was a young dog that was sooooo gifted in ways that were very important to me, and had all the bells and whistles, I might consider doing it again, but generally speaking, I'm done.

When you have to make one do it, you are always having to tweak on them.

Just like my old 67 GMC I used to have when I was a young guy--I was always having to tighten the nuts on the headers. Periodically, you just had to do it.

Same with dogs you make stay treed. It isn't natural, so you are always having to "redo" what you have already done before.

Trapper4life:"would you cull your children if they didn't grow up to be what you wanted them to be?"

I never thought I'd see the day when a professed trapper would equate human life with an animals life. You sound like those PETA pukes.

So many of you want them to give up already. The dog is running and finding the tree, it then STAYS at the tree! All the dog needs is to learn that it's OK to stand there and BARK! How many dogs are taught to not stand around and bark at home and then you expect them to stand at a tree and bark. You must teach the dog that it's ok to bark at the tree. Hunted with other dogs they learn to bark because the others do.

There have be many good susgestions on how to get this dog to start barking at the tree and it sounds like this will be a good dog then.

OK...

Tie her back, shoot the coon out and don't let her have it. Just let her stand there and bark and raise cain.

Do this over and over until she starts barking treed.

It also might help to let another dog fight the coon while she watches.

But whatever you do, don't breed her.

I have one

that does that when he can see me, but not when he's in deep. When he's in deep, he'll chop chop chop until I get there. He's been real bad about not barking treed at field trials where there's a crowd looking at the tree.

My advice: don't try to find her if she doesn't bark treed. Stay at a distance and make some noise yourself so she knows where you are. When she makes any noise at all, go toward her a little bit and make some more noise so she knows you're closer. If she comes off the tree and in to you, send her back. Don't go to the tree until she is barking on it. Pretty soon, she'll get the idea that she is supposed to call you to the tree. If she shuts up when you get there, well thats a forgiveable fault.

"You must teach a dog that it is ok to bark at the tree".....Common....you can't be serious. This guys not trainig a poodle. Granted, it's a Redbone but even the red dogs shouldn't need to be taught to tree.

I've hunted several pups that would strike and trail by themselves but would not bark on the tree until they were hunted with another dog, then they were vocal on the tree.

How many times have you gone to a tree with a pup and encouraged them to tree?

Maybe your dogs are allowed to bark all of the time, maybe not. Mine are not allowed to bark unless they are barking at something and then they must hush when told. They are not allowed to bark when I'm feeding either. Sometimes it takes a pup a time or two to realise I want them to bark up the tree and that it's ok.

Had one like that and was offered $100 for her. She was 14 months old, would locate a tree and then bird dog the tree (no bark) She would be standing on the tree looking straight up it. Seen one cross the road and dumped on it, after a short track the coon was treed and we squalled it down and they retreed it. The female treed good on both trees and was a Gr. Nt just past her second birthday. One of the hardest loud bawl mouth treedogs I have ever heard. I can't tell you what might click in her brain that will start her to treeing. She may start on any tree and be a treedog from then on.
