i have a young walker hound that hunts great goes hunting hard strikes gets deep and trees about everytime we cut her lose but seems to be treeing squirrels or just missing real bad.... can anyone give me any advice on breaking a coonhound off of squirrels at night? any help will be helpful... thanks ronald.

Break her during the day. Run some electricity through her and don't start on low, nip this problem in the bud hard and fast!

arudd, first thing that has to take place for this dog to have a chance is break the owner form thinking there are squirrels in all those slick trees.

well i have been hunting along time but never run across this problem. and i do know mr. conkey that every tree does not have a squirrel in it . but you can watch her and she uses her nose trailing and getting up on trees that has little nest in or small hole and you know a coon is not going on all them small trees. the squirrels may not still be in the tree but i beleive that is what is happening.... thanks ronald.

Hunt your dog erly in the morning at daylight and you will see whats going on. theres somthing about daylight that just lets the truth be known. if your dog is treeing squirrels you will see the squirrels and you will know for sure. now if your dog is slick treeing that will come to light as well . watch how your dogs nose works the tracks it trailing if the trailing is eratick and not strait lined at some point then most likely you have a squirrel dog. and if its a good one call me

i have truned a coon loose for her just to see if she would miss it and slick tree but she will have the coon everytime. and not even let her know you truned it loose and let it be 15 to 20 min. before we turn her loose after the coon and she looks real good.we have never worked her on cage coons sense we had her. she is almost 2yrs old i only had her about 8 mos.

.Was your dog started on them???Most dogs will quit squirrels after awhile.If you knock a few coon out to them.If your running track then treeing at night.Chances are its not (squirrels). A coon will also get into a squirrel nest .Trying to hide...They will also use them if theres not a lot of dens in the area.Any hole in a tree big enough for a coon to get there (head) in can be a den.We hug a (big coon) in a hole last night.Tyler shot the coon as he was trying to get his head into a hole.Now hes hug up..LOL.If a dogs treeing slick (a lot) chances are they are just coming up short..Lead them off the tree and re-cast them.They should pick the trail back up and tree the coon.Many young dogs can get tree happy at times..You have to be careful about shinning trees while hunting..The last thing a guy should do is (pet a dog up) on a slick tree .To get them treeing better..That just makes a dog slick tree more...I never pet up a dog on a tree. Unless it has a coon up it...
