Can anyone tell me where or how to find if a particular state has a 'right to retrieve law" in regards to hunting dogs. In particular I am looking for information on the State Of Georgia, thanks

i know in minnesota the right to retrieve law is in the hunting reg books. you can find them in most places that sells license. look under your state dnr website and look their also.

I think this is one major Law that UKC needs to lobby for in everystate in Kansas if your dog gets on the wrong ground you can do apsoulty not a thing but beg. I love Iowa were you can leave your gun at the fence and retrieve your dog. This should be the most important law to every dog hunter.

law

Once upon a time there was an article in Coonhound Bloodlines about this it told what states had it and did not.I called UKC to ask to run it again but they acted like they didnt have a clue and did not return my call but some one there probably knows about it.The article was from in the 90's probably the mid 90's.

here in Va you have the right to retreive law. no firearm and no driving to dogs on lands where you don't have permission but you can go get your dog's. If landowner comes out and ask for your name you have to give it to them and then go on. This law is one of the most important laws to have in my opionion.

we don't have a right to retreive law in Tennessee...... a couple years ago i talked to the DA in my district and was told that their office will not prosecute for retreiving a hunting dog... if not mistaken he said the running at large satute would cover hunters..... he did say not to take a gun onto the property & not to shine trees, go straight to the dog hook a lead and walk out, anything other than that you are hunting and can be prosecuted....... you BETTER talk to your DA and see what his take is............. bout the only time we run into retreiving problems is from yankees that move in on 1 or 2 acres and think they own everything around 'em.......

cara unfortuntaly in georgia we don't have the right to retrieve if your dog is on posted property the land owner can press charges if you go on there to get it. but i know in the county i hunt it's really rural and the county police will escort on you there. but i talked to a dnr officer and he said in georgia we don't have the right to retrieve rule so basically we are SOL if the land owner says we can't come on there property

LOL, that is exactly what happened here ! We have 86 acres that wraps around thier home and 5 acres. I don't have a beef with where they are from at all...But they are from up north.
We started having a run in with them this summer. They got one of those BIG, HUGE, Mastiff/Pit Bull looking dogs. I do not remember what it is called. But it is MEAN !!!!!!!!!! They let it run thier yard, which I have no problem with. It's when the dang thing comes after us and jumps up on your truck door that I have a problem with. On our land !!!!!!!! We called the pound and the law on them about it, and I told em I was gonna shoot the bast*** if he came out after one of my kids or dogs again. They now keep him on a chain. BUT, when they see us going to the back of our property at night to hunt, he has been coming out and making sure our hounds do not come across him...He shot his gun one night. Not sure if he shot at her or in the air, the hound was not hit. But she was so scared, she didn't want to go hunting for a few days afterwards. Bad thing was we were in Arora, KY for the weekend at and event. What a stressful night that was.
I do know that these folks are T.R.O.U.B.L.E.. They did not like the idea that we took offence to thier monster dog running us on OUR property. Now we have to figure out how to get our coonhounds to understand that the 5 acres in the middle of us is off limits !!!!!!!! The surrounding land owners know we run the dogs and have told us to come on and get our hound if we have to.
I just don't understand why folks from any where have to be so hard to deal with. These folks are crazy !!!!!!!! And they call us Rednecks !!!!!!!!!!

getting a hound

we have not had an issue but I can see where it could happen some day. I was trying to retrieve two of ours a couple weekends ago and they blew right through our area. I was waiting on a road and a local law enforcement officer stopped and I should have asked him then but didnt think of it. He was good and explained some of the backroads in an area I didnt know and even gave me his county map out of his car. Luckily they got close enough to the road that I could call them out. Our property is surrounde by a lot of acreage of timber company lease land (a few thousand) so hopefully we dont run into to many problems.
I wonder how this gets to be a law and how someone or a group would go about pushing to make it a law, anyone know?

In MO I believe a sheriff can escort you, only if you are unarmed, and the dog is "bayed on game".

Send me a copy of that law, I'd really like to see it. I don't think there is one in Pennsylvania

The Game Warden told me that there was no such law, and that you would just have to hope that common sense would prevail.

what happens

I had a drunk farmer tell me that he better not catch my dog on his places or he would shoot them. Now I have never hunted his place and wasnt even hunting when he stopped and talked to me, I was sighting in a gun at my other neighbors place and he just started ranting to me when he saw my dog box in my truck. I told him I only hunt places that I have permission but some of those places are across the fence from his land! So yes I will be going to get my dog if it crosses the fence. But what I he doesnts know is that I own property across the fence from one of his 80 acre tracts that I just purchased and his cows are out all the time! Now if he shoots my dog I will call the law, but if his cow crosses the fence I will not shoot cause that is illegal but I will charge him rent for every hour the cow grazes on my property! I belive we have the right to retrieve in oklahoma but not sure. I know it is illegal to shoot some ones livestock or animal of any kind with out permission.

But if the guy does shoot my dog can I sue him to pay for the dog and how much can I get? I think I can get the price of the dog plus all future litters that the dog would have or sire. If any one knows about this let me know as I may need to find out. Although I plan to stay as clear of his places as I can. And also how much rent should I charge for when his cow crosses the fence on me and is that even legal not sure as I have always just caught my neighbors cows and put them up and fixed there fence in the past but on this new place I wont be doing that for this guy since he was a di#k he#d to me for no reason.
What do you guys think!

bigdavidbeebe - Prolly not gonna do ya any good to charge him rent for the cows... ya know he won't pay it. Just tell him that if he wants to shoot your dogs when they cross onto his land, you're gonna shoot his cows next time they get out onto yours... and you're gonna have 'em processed and get some steaks!!

WELL....MAYBE FOR ONCE, NC HAS A GOOD THING! LOL.

IN NC, IF YOUR DOG GETS ON TO SOMEONE'S PROPERTY AND YOU NEED TO RETRIEVE THEM, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CALL THE COUNTY DISPATCH OR 991, AND THEY WILL SEND AN OFFICER OUT TO ASSIST YOU IN GETTING YOUR DOGS BACK.

3 WEEKS AGO, WE HAD SID, SID JR, A BUDDY HAS HIS DUAL GRAND REDBONE MALE, AND THEY TREED ON THIS MAN'S LAND.

WELL, QUINCY KNEW THAT THEY WERE CLOSE TO GAME LANDS, BUT WERENT SURE IF THEY WERE STILL ON IT.

HE WENT OUT THE ROAD, AND SURE ENOUGH THEY WERE ON THE GUY'S PROPERTY. WHICH HE OWNS 2.5 ACRES AND IS TOTALLY SURROUNDED BY FOREST SERVICE EXCEPT FOR HIS DRIVEWAY.

WELL, QUINCY WAS THERE AND THE GUY SAW HIM COMING WITH HIS LIGHT, AND THE MAN TOLD HIM HE WAS GOING TO SHOOT HIS DOGS IF HE DIDNT GET THEM OFF HIS PROPERTY.

WELL.......THEN LO & BEHOLD WHEN THEY STARTED TO THEM, THE MAN TOLD THEM TO GET OFF HIS PROPERTY OR HE'D BE SHOT.

QUINCY DID TELL THE MAN THAT HE WAS CALLING THE LAW AND HAD THEM ON THE PHONE AND IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO HIS DOGS HE WOULD PROSECUTE TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.

THE MAN TOLD HIM TO GO AHEAD AND CALL THE LAW BECAUSE HE'D ALREADY CALLED.

WELL, NEEDLESS TO SAY QUINCY AND MIKE WALKED BACK OUT AND DROVE UP TO WHERE THE MAN'S DRIVEWAY COMES OUT ON THE 2-LANE ROAD, WHICH IS LESS THAN 100 YARDS FROM WHERE THE DOGS ARE TREEING AND WHERE THE MAN LIVES.

WELL, THE SHERRIFF'S DEPUTY GETS THERE AND HE GOES AND TALKS TO THE GUY, THEN HE COMES BACK AND TALKS TO QUINCY AND MIKE, AND THIS IS THE SAME MAN THAT 3 YEARS AGO SHOT AT QUINCY AND MIKE AND THEY CALLED THE COPS AND IT IS STILL ON RECORD WITH SWAIN COUNTY SDEPT. AND PRETTY MUCH THE COPS TOLD THE MAN THAT FROM NOW ON IF ANYONE'S DOGS COME ON HIS PROPERTY HE IS NOT TO BOTHER THEM. IF HE DOES HE'S TO TIE THEM UP WHERE THEY CANT GET LOOSE AND CALL THE OWNER. HE TOLD THE LANDOWNER THAT IF THE SWAIN COUNTY SHERRIFFS DEPARTMENT GOT ONE MORE COMPLAINT ABOUT HIM TRYING TO DO STUFF TO PEOPLES DOGS OR SHOOTING AT ANYONE, THEN SWAIN COUNTY SHERRIFFS DEPARTMENT WERE GOING TO PROSECUT AGAINST HIM FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY COULD, INCLUDING ALL OF THE STUFF THAT HE'S DONE THAT IS "JUST ON RECORD". WHICH WHERE HE SHOT AT QUINCY AND MIKE HE ADMITTED TO THE COP STANDING THERE THAT HE SHOT AT THEM, AND THE COP TOLD HIM THAT IF THEY DECIDED TO PRESS CHARGES, WHICH THEY COULD STILL DO, THAT HE WOULD BE CHARGES WITH "ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON WITH INTENT TO CAUSE BODILY HARM".

SO, TO MAKE A LONGER STORY SHORTER, THE GUY WONT BE BOTHERING ANYONE ELSE'S DOGS OR SHOOTING AT ANYONE ELSE.

Two or three years ago some coyote hunters were charged and given trespass fines for their dogs running coyotes across posted land. They were told the dogs were an extension of the hunter and they paid their fines. The land owner didn't want his deer ran off his land. He gave me written permission to coon hunt after he kilt his deer.
