Indiana Opening Night...

well it comes in november 8th at high noon. you bet ur bottom dollar me and friends will be out and tryin our luck at treein as many coon as possible. gets dark right at about 7, so we can hunt a long time and be home before 1 and be at work or school the next day fine. ...main reason i started this topic was too see how everybody here in the hoosier state does on the thursday night...got me a new truck to hunt out of, so u'll be seeing a lot of it at the local woods haha. well...give us a story or 2 about ur opening night.

My highest total for opening night is 14 singles. With the weather for tommorow night im going to try and beat that number. Usually kill 1 out of every tree opening night then slack way off after that. 1 out of 3 or so.

I not setting my goals to high I'd be happy with one. That is if my pup trees it.

GA Dawg,

I hunted in one of the other KC's one hour hunts on Monday, and we scored on four coon during the hour, and found a dog after the hunt on number five, and another dog on number six.

On Tuesday night a different KC, different one hour hunt, and we scored on five during the hour......

It's not that tough!

Yep, 26....we had 2 GOOD young hounds and they stayed split treed more of the night. Had one tree with 3 in it and a few with doubles but most were singles and going to 2 trees most every drop. We even went to the local hang out for breakfast at 1 or 2 o'clock and had 17 by then. Hunted from dark til daylight though.

The biggest misconception is that it's like that all night, every night....

I've also hunted in one hour hunts when you could not BUY a coon on the outside of a den tree. Shoot, I've hunted HOURS ON END on some nights.

Come go with us during the full moon in December once! You would think that you were back in Georgia. It's ususally either feast of famine....very little in between.

I can't imagine being able to hunt in areas with that many coons. You guys are lucky. I don't know why we don't have as many coons as you do with all the wooded area that we have here. The scarcity of coons isn't because we kill them out. I just shot one out the other night. The last one my dog was given was last Feb. There are also very few hunters here. Our dogs usually have to go deep to strike and then run the fire out of an old hill coon to make him climb. Don't get me wrong, there are exceptions and some areas where you can look at 4 or 5 in a 2 hour hunt. I would guess that the abundance of crop land has a lot to do with the count. Count you blessings.

Wayne,

It's not the acreage of timber that drives the coon population...it's the acres of CROPS.

Food is plentiful, and the coon don't have to travel for water or food, making it a perfect habitat for large coon populations....

My son Nicholas and I will be heading out with just one hound to tree a few early in the evening. Since it’s a school night I’ll probably drop him off at home around 10:00 or so and head out with another dog.

I’ve been doing this a long time and there is still something VERY special and exciting about unsnapping a hound on opining night of the season. Makes me feel like a kid again!

Wayne,

Another thing to remember the more timber the more places they can be! Here with smaller wood lots the coon are kinda all packed in those little hot spots Sorry, I don't mean to rub it in Joe is right though it can turn on and off real quick!

Jerry,

I get the same feeling.....closest filling I can get to padding up and taking the football field again

Yeah, guys I'm sure it's a food thing. But do count yourselves lucky. I can imagine that it must be pretty easy to train a pup with so many coons. Here I ride a mule hard with a pup and maybe average getting a strike every 2 miles. That's lots of riding. Of course these old coons have to forage far and wide to survive. Anyhow, good luck on the opener.

First dump my old dog and pup went 200yards short of 2 miles and treed on a caged coon in somebodys barn. I have no idea how that happened. We ended up getting four my pup treed once with the old dog and got split once. Not bad for a 7 month old pretty happy with him. He has a nice locate for a pup and a nice tree dog too. Hope he finishes out as well as he is starting.

Opening Night

It started out slow for us, I had my two best hanlders in the woods. lol

Molly 12yrs old & Katie 9yrs old (Katie has Down Syndrome)

Then it was time to take them home (school night) then we killed 3 before midnight. From midnight to 4am we killed 14 more, so in all we had a good night (17 coon). Good luck to everyone the rest of the weekend.
