Definition of a Reproducer?

Ever now and then I think of something that I would like to learn from everyone that is participating in our sport of coonhunting and so I have I come up with something.

What in "your opinion" defines a top reproducer? Female or Male makes no difference to me, nor does the breed. Just what is your opinion and what have you seen over your years of hunting would support your answer?

Now I know a lot will say Rat Attack because of the amount of pup earnings. UKC tracks GRNTs/NTCHs based off of pups registered also. But, is this truly the measure of a reproducer whether or not a dog's pups win in the hunts? When Rat or any of the top stud dogs started out, obviously something attracted people to them.

I have seen dogs that are spitting images of there sire and I have seen dogs with mouths that are the same, would this classify the sire as a reproducer because it shows distinctive traits. I once read where T-Ball stated Harry will mark dogs for generations.....

Anyway, what are your thoughts....This should make for an interesting read.

Thanks for your responses.

My opinion on a top reproducer would be.A hound that has offspring become coondogs.

A REPRODUCER IS A DOG THAT IS PUTTING PUPS ON THE GROUND IN WHICH THE MAJORITY OF THE LITTER SUIT THE NEEDS OF WHATEVER THE OWNER CHOOSES TO DO WITH THAT DOG.

WHETHER IT'S COMPETITON, PLEASURE, BEAR, CAT, OR SHOWING.

BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY TYPES OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT DO SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS WITH THEIR DOG THE ONLY WAY I KNOW HOW TO COVER ALL THE BASIS OF A REPRODUCER IS TO SAY:

AS LONG AS THE OWNER OF THE DOG IS SATISFIED WITH WHAT THEIR DOG IS DOING, THE DOG HAS DONT IT'S JOB AS A REPRODUCER.

NOW IF YOU'RE WANTING TO KNOW WHAT IS A REPRODUCER OF COMPETITON DOGS?

WHICHEVER DOG PRODUCES THE MOST NTCH'S AND GRNTCH'S WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF PERMANENTLY REGISTERED PUPS BECAUSE YOU CANT ENTER AN UNREGISTERED DOG INTO A NITE HUNT.

IF YOUR TALKING ABOUT PLEASURE HUNTING:

WHICH EVER DOG PRODUCES THE KIND OF DOG THAT THE AVERAGE PLEASURE HUNTER LIKES TO HUNT AND ENJOYS TAKING TO THE WOODS.

IF YOUR TALKING ABOUT SHOWING:

WHICEVER DOG PRODUCES THE KIND OF DOG THAT THE OWNER CAN WALK UP TO JUST ABOUT ANY SHOW AND BE ABLE TO COMPETE AND HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT WINNING.

IF YOUR TALKING ABOUT BEAR OR CAT HUNTING:

WHICHEVER DOG PRODUCES THE KIND OF DOG THAT THE BEAR/CAT HUNTER CANT WAIT TO UNSNAP. BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHEN HE DOES THERE'S GOING TO BE MEAT IN THE TREE.

A REPRODUCER IS A DOG THAT PEOPLE COME BACK TO BUY MORE PUPS OFF OF OR BREED TO MORE THAN ONCE. BECAUSE IF THEY WERENT SATISFIED WITH THE DOG AS A REPRODUCER THEY WOULDNT COME BACK FOR MORE.

THAT IS JUST MY OPINION THOUGH.

SORRY IT WAS SO LONG, BUT THE ONLY WAY I KNEW HOW TO EXPLAIN MY OPINION.

i would consider a good dominate reproducer a dog that produces his likeness no matter the bitch he dominates the breeding and puts his charactoristics in his pups. like rat and his strong treeing instinct being instilled in every litter thats a reproducer of his likeness. just my oppinion.

If a man can take you out with pups out of multiple litters off multiple different females. They all sound alike, look alike, and have the same style...the only common denominator is the male...

That dog is a reproducer.

a good reproducer to me is a dog that produces coondogs (or whatever kind of game youre after) not just one good one every couple litters or so but a very high percentage of pups from every litter turn out to be consistant hard going dogs that people, not just the owners, enjoy to be in the woods with.

Briar Cliff Racie was.
I believe you could have bred her to a post and a coondog would've come out.

Not the answer you're looking for but she was. I can write out everything she reproduced by title but I have hunted with 8 (coon treer's) that will never be put in the hunts and in my eyes that is the only numbers I need to see.......two looking down.

Thanks for all the replies...and Christy, it wasn't too long....I do like the reply about multiple females. I do believe the female plays a big role, but if consistancy over several females makes sense....

Thanks again for all the replies.....

re·pro·duce (rpr-ds, -dys)
v. re·pro·duced, re·pro·duc·ing, re·pro·duc·es
v.tr.
1. To produce a counterpart, image, or copy of.

I would say Joe Newlin hit the nail on the head.

well doug 17 you are half right his likeness and better always room for improvement. male or female just think what the walker dogs would be like if breeders did not try to improve on them they have really improved from years back.

What me and a friend of mine is trying to do is line breed some track dogs real close to produce some real nice females and then out cross on a few different stud dogs. I believe we have are real close to capturing the mouth, desire, and looks. From there we will dabble in the tree part. I want a dog that can run a track first. I would rather walk to one or two trees and see one or two coons than walk to 10 trees and see one coon.

roughcreek,
I aggree with you when you said the tracking ability has suffered, but I don't think every walker strain has lost it. If the breeders don't look at it very closely I think we are on the verge of losing it soon....

Thanks again for all the replys. It is interesting to read what people think about the reproducing ability of our hounds...

some of these post on here make me laugh and some have some truth to them now haveing said that

to me a good reproducer is a hound that consistantly throws the same characteristics in most all pups weather it be track, tree, looks,go power, independence, mouth,or temperment or all of the above which is very rare but that is my version of a reproducer

Opie,
I have also read many on here that make me laugh. Especially the ones where people are arguing. I like starting one every now and then just learn from people that have been doing longer than me or could have a better way of doing something.

Example:

I found a post on here that talks about making a similar coon feeder to the new fusion stuff. I am going to try it and see how it works.

As for the breeding....We DNA a lot of hounds in todays coonhunting. There has to be a way to study that stuff and determine which DNA strands produce what....like mouth, track, tree, independance. If we could do that I believe we could really produce or reproduce a very balanced hound.

I am not smart enough to do all that nor do I have the money, but it would be something..

Tim

I think it starts with a difference in terms. There are "producers" and "reproducers". A reproducer takes what it is and passes it to its offspring. A producer throws pups that have the desired traits, although they may or may not have them threreselves.

For instance an outstanding track dog is bred to an outstanding tree dog. The powers that be grace the pups with the best of both parents, and the pups are outstanding track and tree dogs. This cross produced, however did it REPRODUCE? Yes. Did the track dog REPRODUCE tree dogs? No, it produced them and the tree dog REPRODUCED them. Did the tree dog REPRODUCE track dogs? No, it produced them and the track dog REPRODUCED them.

No other word in coonhunting is misused as much as that one.

would you breed to a dog that the majority of his pups was worthles but out of some litters there would be a freak that dominated other dogs with its speed and intellegence at treeing coon?

I dont know, but my question is should you breed to the freak or not? I have heard this argued at every coffee shop, feed store, and coon club around.

yes. unless you're content with medicore dogs at best but lets face it most dogs are worthless anyway even out of the best known reproducers so why would'nt you try for the best dog that you can hunt.
