I've got a big hound of a Walker with plenty of Horse Power and I might need a better leash to hold him.
Right now I'm using a Chain & Nylon one. Has snaps on both ends, and O Ring in the middle. I usually clip the nylon part to the O Ring, to shorten it up.
Last coon season after a coon came down he broke the Chain part in half. I got a new one and now a few nights ago he bent the S hook that held the snap on.

So what's the best leash to hold this horse back?

I had a big walker that would do the same I made a home made leash for him using 5/16 inch chain and s hooks the same size witha extra heavy duty snap

I think your problem is not the leash...but the leash training. If one of mine pulled that hard they'd learn about how upset it makes me! Get one em...there's no reason for them to pull so hard when tied or on a leash.

I like to use horse leads on these guys. Very comfortable on the hands as well.

I would use a real good choker and a leather lead and some obediance would help . . . Or you could use another lead that wraps around his head and you can get those at your pet store called Hault .

the hound is breaking the leash while TIED - when a coon comes down - NOT while walking with the handler. That has NOTHING to do with obedience - it's a dog with strong drives. You don't EVER tie a dog out with a HALTI!

I have a dog that would chew through the leather/nylon end when tied back from the tree in comp hunts. When pleasure hunting I never tied her back. I bought two leads either from nitelite or wick outdoor works (I can't remember which). Anyways it's cable with orange plactic coating and a clear rubber sleeve over the entire thing. Never had a problem since. All the connections are heavy duty as well. They have clips on each end and an O-ring that goes the entire length for hooking at a tree. I like them. I've had then for about 4 years now and still going strong.

If ya want to drive up to NH, you can try out my tractor chain. I use it for skidding trees, it's rated to 10,000 lbs. It'd be a pain to lug in and out of the woods, but it'll keep your dogs tied back...I'd bet you could even tie your biggest dog, the incredible Hulk, and Bigfoot back at the same time without anyone getting loose. lol

i like the little plastic leads & tri tronics just hit the little
red button and tell him heal in a couple of 3wks just
throw the lead on the ground & tell him heal & he will
follow you to the truck.

when tyin back take the handle were the snap is wrap it around the tree then take the snap to the oring with the snaps the closer you can get the hound to the tree the better shorter distance

i've never had any luck with cable leadeverysingle one i have had pulls apart after about 1 month of use. now a all leather leash should work great. I always just use chain and ny;on leads, i like them a lot.

them dogs know what they're doing ... you can train a pitbull not to pull on a leash or chew on it so a hound can be shown the error of his ways too.

But , the best leads there are made by Master's Pride .... he is high but his rolled collars and police leads will plum make you tingle when you feel them in your hands .

None of these wholesale type dog suppliers carry the good stuff nor could they carry top quality hand crafted leather stuff and make a dime .

they're worth it , I did also have him use heavy duty stainless steel rings for snapping to instead of brass ... so that also cost more.

Even the average made rolled collars will win you over ... but this guy buffs off all the edges , works the stretch out of the leather and oils it up so that when you get it you have a finished piece of equipment you can brag on.

I ordered a high price lead from Quillen and the idiots put the O-ring on the wrong side of the lead so that when you made the loop ... the finished side of the lead rubs the tree , and for only $45 .

Man, what kinda hounds are ya'll hunting?, lol The way i keep up with dog leashes, i couldnt stand a dog that required a $50 leash and $100 collar. They had some sharp looking leather collars, but i have never seen many leather collars hold up, especially if the dog is kept on a chain much.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I just have to narrow it down now and then see if it holds up.
And yes, it's mainly all the pulling he does at the tree while tied, Not while leading him, he knows better than that.

Hey Laura We have so many Amish around here... did you think about having them make something special for you and this powerhouse? Harness leather that is properly conditioned with the heavier hardware should hold up for ya or they could make better recomendations. I never thought about the Amish, I've got Amish neighbors even, thanks for reminding me! I'll have to check with the place I get my hunting boots from see if they could do something, and for how much. lol

I live in Michigan but get all of my collars and leashes from Troyers leather in Ashland Ohio. They will custom make anything you want. I had a special leash made for a large shepherd out of 2" leather.
