Comp or Pleasure

If you had to choose one, would you choose a dog that excelled in the hunts but was not too fun to hunt for pleasure or would you choose the hound that did a great job treeing coons all year round and was a pleasure to hunt but did not fit the standards of what some might prefer in a good competition hound? Just wondering..Thanks ; Ron

I have seen dogs that excelled at both. Just not many. I want a dog that can win, but i have to be able to hunt it through the week. Im not hunting a babbling tree grabber no matter how much money and trophies have been won with them.

Since I dont comp hunt but maybe 1-2 times a yr I would say pleasure hound. I have seen good hounds in both areas.
One kind of hound I will not stand is Mean, slick treeing, cant run a track and a me too hound.

Its impossible to have a hound that is GOOD at winning hunts that isn't fun to hunt during the week. They win more by treeing more coons, don't they?

That may not hold true for those folks that go to the woods hoping to stay close to the truck and not really wanting to tree many coons. But we are talking "coonhunting" here, aren't we?

What would make a successful comp dog not fun to hunt for pleasure? I wouldn't think the dog would know if he is comp hunting or not and should hunt the same way. A lot of times when I pleasure hunt with a buddy we pretend we are comp hunting and call the dog anyway. We don't keep a scorecard on paper but I usually end up doing it in my head when the night was over to see how he was doing. It has been so long since I have been out that I brought have forget it all anyway, lol.

To me , a dog that always splits is not very enjoyable to hunt while pleasure hunting with friends. But , would make for a successful comp dog.
A friend had a dog that I just loved hunting by himself. If he struck , he was gonna tree. And a VERY high percentage of the time , he had the coon on the outside. If the coon weren't moving , he'd just fall treed on the BIGGEST tree ( circle ) in the woods.
But , when we took my female along , it was a split-tree every time. Took all the fun out of it for me. LOL
Absolutely the closest thing to a perfect comp dog I've ever seen.

When I go hunting with friends , it's to have a good time shootin' the bull. If the dogs are split-treeing all night , it's cuts into my " bull-shootin' " time. LOL

Other than that , they are both one and the same. If it strikes , it better get treed. And when it gets treed , it better have the coon. PERIOD !

I have to disagree with that. I have been with alot of consistent winners at the hunts, that i could not hunt through the week. And it dang sure aint because i want to stay close to the road.

babbling, trash runnin dogs that switch off or just grab a big tree. they win in the hunts, and in my opinion arent fun to hunt at all. i would take a good pleasure hound with the meat any day. just like john said we are coonhuntin... after all

Different strokes for different folks!!

Going to go with John D on this one. You can still win in the hunts with a dog that does't babble going out and when he trees shows you a coon. Seems like most have different opinions on comp. dog. You have to tree coons to enjoy pleasure hunting them so why wouldn't they do good in hunts. I have to have both if they want too eat at my place. JMO!! Babblers!! Don't care for them. Guess thats why I took three third strikes at Nat. Bluetick days but I still won the cast and king of hunt. Thanks, Danny G.

For me i guess the dog i think enough of to campaign is enjoyable to hunt during the week or it wouldn't be at my house.

As far as a dog that is always split treed can only score the coon that he trees , you give me a dog that will split when it has to to have a coon and 1 that will back if necessary on a coon is a tuff dog to beat period. Simply put i am scoring my coon and yours!!

If babbling, slick treeing and hounds that are too aggressive seem to be the big factors that determine the faults that are bothersome to most pleasure hunters and competition hunters then why are so many out there with these traits? Mabey we should look a little closer to what we are breeding to accomplish.. Trophys and small cash rewards are like cheating on your girl friend or spouse, " Short term gratification with long term aggrivation"
I for one do very little comp hunting any more but I do hunt the heck out of a nice hound when I can. THose of you who breed your dogs like the ones we all say we would like to own and hunt, please keep up the good work, I may need to buy a couple good pups sometime.. And to Danny Glista, Keep up the good work and stay on the track that you seem to be taking.. Thanks: Ron

pleasure because if you have a babblin slick treein idiot that jsut takes away all of the pleasure were not in it to see a dog get treed were in it to see a dog get a treed and have a coon

I didnt say that a man cant win with a dog like a like to hunt. I have a young dog here that is going to take 3rd strike on most casts. He has been in 7 casts and won 6 of them. I dont know how what i said got turned into me running down competition dogs.

competition.you win hunts treeing coons not slick treein, not babblin not fighting.Maybe the post should be what do you look for in a pleasure dog?Cause I look for the same thing I look for in my competition dog GO FIND COONS.Split if they don't wanna cover thats their problem,if they gotta coon and you don't don't dilly dally around to decide whether your gonna cover or not git on it.I love to hear a race that lasts awhile too, but you better not bawl around in one place for to long or daddys coming in with a switch. If ya can't figure out a lose shut your pie whole and drift out and find the track.
I also get sick of people saying"they'll just grab the biggest tree they can find and start treeing" BS thats just a dog that couldn't figure out where the track went and he smelled something on that one.To many slicks is just cause someone didn't know what an arse whipping was,not just a whack and bad dog but one that makes the dog say I better check next time cause that hurt.I for one am not afraid to get off the tailgate quit BS'n for a little bit and solve a problem with slick treein or track straddlin boo- hooing.jmo

Babbling, trash running dogs that switch off and find a big tree is not what I see in alot of big hunts. As posted earlier. Lots of good hounds that deserve to be there winning!! JMO. Danny

Positively True!!!!!!!! Coon must be seen.

With this being the criteria, do you think the dog with the most + points is always the best dog????

Do you think dogs that can't tree a coon by themselves ever walk away with + points????

Not trying to start something. Just wondering.
