Snakes alive! King cobra reported in Cumberland woods

Posted: May. 19, 2008

Fayetteville, N.C. — Wildlife agents are scouring the woods near Cedar Creek after a man says he spotted what looks like a king cobra there last week.

Vernon Byrd was on an all-terrain vehicle in a field off Johnson Road last Tuesday when he said an 8-foot-long snake reared up beside him – and the serpent's head was about shoulder high to him.

"I caught something out of my eye, and this snake comes up beside me and looked at me," Byrd said. "I've seen every kind of snake in this part of the country, but I've never seen a snake like this."

He called Freddie Mims, a licensed wildlife rescue agent, who said the description of the snake sounded like a king cobra, the world's largest poisonous snake.

"Somebody (probably) had one illegally and sold it illegally. The person that bought it (likely) accidentally let it escape," Mims said.

Cumberland County Animal Control officials said they're trying to determine if anyone in the area ever owned a king cobra. Having an exotic pet is illegal in Cumberland County and carries a $1,000 fine.

Nearby residents said they thought the snake escaped from Jambba's Ranch, a local tourist attraction with exotic animals like a 700-pound bear and a camel.

"It's not true. We don't have a king cobra. We never had a king cobra," said James Bass, owner of Jambba's Ranch.

Residents said pit bull puppies and chickens have disappeared in recent days.

"(I'm) staying in the house," said Ida Edge, who has been on edge about the situation.

Byrd said he doesn't walk in the field anymore without a gun, and he won't go into the woods where he last saw the snake.

"(Wildlife agents) tried to get me to go with them, but I wouldn't. I told them they hadn't seen what I'd seen."

That just really gives me the heebie jeebies !!! A COBRA !! Just think about it...We don't see those kind of snakes...that is a big ole snake....when they raise up they can be as tall as an average person... Those things are mean, they don't play !!!!

LOL...They already have the Lizard Man over there in the Carolinas somewhere. I sure hope they catch one or the other soon before they find each and start raising a family !!!!

REWARD
$5

Daughter's pet snake lost, last seen in the Cumberland Woods area. Slipped it's collar while with out for a slither. About 8 to 10 feet long, dark colored snake, answers to Mr. Wiggles. Likes to rear up to shoulder height and spread it's hood all the while displaying it's highly venomous 2" fangs. If seen do not approach, just call the cops. He's very friendly but gets carried away while playing, and will KILL you.

Please help my daughter get her precious Mr. Wiggles back home safe and sound.

Coachwhip

A snake that can be found in Southeastern NC but that is rare is called the coachwhip. It is very long and slender and most people have never heard of them. These snakes also raise up to see prey from a height advantage...I suspect that is what the guy saw....

LOL...

..I'm always amused at how SCARED people are of snakes! I happen to think they are cool and I'm the MORON who would try to pick it up to see what it was and die...LOL... I've already had the pleasure of handling a couple of youngs snakes in the garden this year. They are still slow since it's cool. Kinda made me miss my old greyhound...he died in Jan. he used to track snakes REALLY well. Often on our walks down the street he'd find me a COOL snake...LOL...

I will also tell you.. if I see a spider I am prone to SCREAMING and running like a VERY FAST baby! Glad the greyhound didn't go for them!

That King Cobra is BEAUTIFUL! the hognose is ugly... the coach whip is kind of ugly too.... Guess I prefer the DEADLY ones... go figure!

Seriously though, be careful out there in the woods and wetlands where there ARE poisonous snakes!

HappyHunting! Heather

Heather never thought you would be the snake type . I can't stand snakes. Im sure I step over snakes too in the dark. If I don't see them Im ok. Its when they sneak up around me standing that gives me the goose bumps! I know they are around for a reason but trust me if Im carrying a gun and I see a snake other then a garder snake its a dead snake.

What about a Lion

Cobra's in the woods now? What's a man to do? Up here in WV. in Greenbrier county, there is a lion loose. Not a bobcat or a mountain lion, a full grown 400 lb. King of the jungle lion. I'm not Lion or Lying bout this either. This has been in all the news papers here. It's been seen by several different people, one of them a DNR employee, in a 3 to 5 mile area. WV DNR have put traps out for it. Hasn't been caught yet as far as I know. DNR doesn't have any ideal where or how it got there. There's been a few calves and goats that have went missing or been found mangled and almost eaten. I deer hunt that county because there's no rifle deer season in the county where I live. That would sure be a shocker to see after you've went to your hunting spot in the dark then, it just starts to get daylight and you see this big kitten walking toward you. I wonder if a field tag would have to be filled out and put on it if you shot it?

Snakes fine...spiders reduce me to idiot behavior! I would gladly run into the LION posted about before a spider! LOL... I always thought snakes were cool. Don't want one as a pet but... they just don't send me into that cold/hot sweat with the fight or flight reaction that a spider does...Shudder. I think about spiders many times a day in the barn.... as I gather eggs etc... Shudder.... we have brown recluse in the area too.... Shudder.....

Remember the song "I don't like spiders and snakes"?
LOL.... how about LIONS and tigers and BEARS oh My! I'm horrified of bears too... bears=spiders on the fear factor but...I don't have to deal with bears here....

Thats ok. I am pretty sure my new Kimber .45 will keep either one of them off of me. It is a good thing they dont have king cobras in Tennessee because, a little elderly 30 pound dog put a whippin on you. LOL! I will never let you live that down.

I like snakes, and would love to find a rattler someday. They're around I guess but I've never found one, and when I was a kid I knew every snake within 50 miles by name!

I've seen some pretty big spiders around here. Once I saw a huge one on the side of a rock while fishing, it was eating a minnow. Very large, hairy spider. Once I was coonhunting and was just standing there leaning against a tree...and HEARD a spider walking through the leaves before I saw it. That thing was HUGE. I moved a few trees down, figured I'd get out of his way. During the summer we have a large spider in fields and standing corn..real big with big webs, kinda pretty...black and yellow markings. Real good size, I dont mess with them and always hope i dont go walking through a web and get a spider in the face some night! Yuck!
