Last night while coonhunting we had four Walkers decide to have a Porky for dinner. We were pulling quills for two hours. We never used to have these infernal things in this area, but recently they seem to be more and more common. How do you break a dog from messing with them? Will shocking work? The damage they can do to a dog that retains a few quills that you miss can be quite deadly, as well as expensive.

Just put some Fishers in them woods. They will kill ém. Of course the fishers will kill just about every thing else too.

We do have a few fisher in the area now but they don't seem to be denting the porkies any too much

live trap on and put an e collar on the dogs and let them smell it lol i have one other way but its a little rougher pm me if u want to know what it is

After most dogs get into them once or twice that gets them to thinking very fast and a little vinger on the quill startens them up too and helps get the quills out too. Best way I have found to break them off porkies is to once treed shoot them out to the dogs with their leashes on and when they smell them beat them and do this with the quill still in their face. Quill around their eyes and chest need to be the first pulled as they will work their way into an eye or the dog heart and kill them.... After a couple of dinners on porky your dogs should be picking something else off the menu for sure!!! 2 hours 4 dogs that isn't bad at all I once was 3 hrs on one dog now that was bad.... quills twice in Autumn. First time 137 of a 3 hr. period, trust me, she felt EVERY one come out. Hubby & I both looked like we did major surgery. Second, I really wouldn't call it messing with a porkie, she had a total of 3 quills. The others we were hunting with bayed one on the ground & I guess she was just nosey. That is the only time we have ever had porkie problems.

As for breaking them from them, some dogs learn the hard way the first time & then some dogs are so hard headed, they never learn. Good luck, though, I feel your frustration.

Rap one end of your leash around a porky and snap the other end to your dogs collar. Walk away and light 'em up. They'll think the porky is doing it and chasing them too. Doing this in an open field works best. Worth a try. wd

Porcupines a pretty slow, so if you want to catch one live to do some breaking, throw a heavy beach towel over them and give a tug...alot of the bigger quills will come off on the towel and will lessen the amount ya have to pull from the dog if it gets a hold of Mr. Porky.

You could take a 55 gallon drum, and catch yourself 2 or 3 porkies using a burlap sack. They like to hang out in grass fields and corn. Throw a few porkies in the drum with your dog, and then drive down a highway with your cousin Cooter or Skeeter in the bed of the truck and the drum full of porkies and mr trashy. When you're going pretty good up a hill yell to Cooter or Skeeter, or Hank if ya got him on board too and have him push the drum out onto the pavement.When the barrel stops rolling, take your dog out and I dont think he'll mess with porkies ever again.

I've never tried this or heered of anyone doing it but I bet it would work. You could just try shocking them when they mess with a porky, that would work too I guess good luck.

They are the hardest thing to break a dog off from some will never be off them.This is what we do and we have more porkys here than we have coon any given night you can see 5-10 in five miles on the road.Put a e collar on you r dog and find one on the road shoot the dog up the road towards the porky and fry it when it gets within a couple of feet from the porky.I mean make it roll once they get started on them and they dont give them up the first time on there own it will only get worse.If they got one in the air leash them tight to the tree and spray them in the face with a mix if hot sauce and water just enough water to get it thin enough to go through the spray bottle.Dont wash there face off till you get back to the truck if that dont work send them South or buy you a few pairs of pliers.Good Luck

if i ever get a chance -

i put a dog on a porcupine track and shock it just the second i know he can smell it


rather shock them lightly several times on different porkies
than one big burn



best way i know -




some dogs do break themselves but i wouldnt count on it -


toughest hounds are always the toughest to break off porkys--

dont feel lonely -- i spent 4 hours a week ago pulling quills out of 3 young dogs-

quills can be fatal if they get into dogs body




i lost a nice pup one time-



had one quill in his liver -- it caused bad infection around his intestines before it got to his liver

Thanks everyone for your advice. One of the dogs in this escapade had his eye swelled up huge and had to be taken to the vet about a month ago, seems like he had an impacted quill approaching his optic nerve, he may have come with this as he was just purchased by a friend. So this second venture he was not much the wiser. I guess I will look for porkies and then shock the dogs. As far as the barrel treatment, well, I didn't fall of the turnip truck just yesterday.
