Was it a coon?
Took the 2 girls, ages 13, myself & Zam out hunting this evening. Oh what fun, they was scared of everything that moved or might have moved, talked & talked about...boys etc. & so on. Made 2 drops, first one, nothing, not even a bark. Second one was in a sweet corn patch that had been throughly pulverized by coon, groundhog, etc. Zam hunted the whole field, under the Mulberry tree & everything & nothing. Then after leashing up & heading for the truck, he starts to really pull on the lead & wind something in the field corn patch. I turned him loose & he took off, I could hear him smelling & working the ground hard, he opens, runs a bit, opens again & kind of goes in circles & back & forth & then takes off down through the corn, wide open & moving. Then he just shut up, not another sound until he comes back to me from the direction we had just walked up from, about 15 minutes later. Could this have been a coon? If so, what happen that he didn't tree it, can a dog just lose a coon like that? I very highly doubt it was a deer, he started the track about 20 feet from us, about 5 rows of corn in. Hubby said maybe a fox, but don't they run in wide circles? Very confused, need help. Also, the moon was very bright.
P.S.: Teenagers are soooo much fun to hunt with...had me scared of my own shadow tonight.
