Sorry Will but your I cant pick just one.
They have to hunt plus I pay close attention to how well they can control a track while doing so with good foot speed. I also pay close attention to the type of mouth but also how they use it.
All of these things have to suit me or im not happy. They tell me im to picky!

And Color and conformation Shouldnt be together either I judge a hound on Conformation as one of the first factors but i could give a hoot about the color LOL
Well i am kinda partial to a good Sadle backed Tri or a true black headed bluetick!!!!!!!

I chose hunt, if they can't jump a rabbit you can't judge the rest ( mouth, tracking, speed etc.) If they don't hunt it doesn't matter if they handle you can reach down and catch them.

Obviously, you would notice the color and conformation first, unless you don't look at the dog when it gets out of the truck.

The next thing you would notice would be the handling, unless the handler just opens the box and ignores the dog, then the dog would do whatever it wants.

The next thing would be the dogs hunt, it'll have to hunt to do the other things.

Then you would notice the kind of mouth the dog has, when he sounds of course.

Next would be how the hound uses his mouth.

Last but not least you would notice the hounds foot speed.

That wasn't too hard once I understood the question.

i like easy questions with easy answers...lol

but what do you look for first when you are out with other hounds. Personally I always look at how a hound hunts. If it comes out of the box ripping it up I will pay alot more attention to the other things. If it isnt hunting then I dont pay anymore attention.

First and foremost , a dog has to hunt. If it don't get out there and find a rabbit , I don't want it.
If I have to jump it , I might as well just shoot the rabbit and forget about having to take care of the dog.

I look for handleing first I dont care how good it can hunt if it dont handle I dont want it. I am out to hunt rabbits not dogs.

Not talking on how far they range out but I want a dog to come running when called and to be easy to lead and load up when done running. I find that most dogs that handle well have the brains to do the other things listed.

I see everyone has a difference in ideas on what makes a good hound some of the people here are more into a dog for pleasure hunting some for purely competetion on the ground and some for the bench. In my opinion is very simple absolutly do not judge a dog at all at first by what it looks like it could have four crooked legs 1 eye and a broke tail but it produces a rabbit while 3 other hounds are standing around sniffing each other and trying to look pretty. I am not at all interested in how it handles at first because I think 90% of how a dog handles is who trains the dog and generally it's the dog that doesn't come on the first call is the one that is trying it's hardest to produce a rabbit for an owner. If your dog is flat running off then your doing something wrong. The one thing I always judge a dog by is what it does the first 20 minutes it hits the ground does it instantly hit the brush and you don't see it till a rabbit is up or does it run around you in 30 foot circles scratching and urinating. Does it act agressive towards other dogs. Now after that I would have to say how they use they're mouth and control a track speed is important but a dog with descent foot that can run a line all day long is going to score more often then one that is blazing fast that blows past the corners and misses lines dunno guys and girls just my 2 cents
