Dell - best combination of price and performance, imo.

computers

we just bought a gateway and are real happy with it. you will find that with every manufacturer there are some models of their computers that are junk and others that excel. a lot like auto manufacturers but even more so.
judge the reliability by the individual model not the manufacturer in whole. that's what we have learned through our research.

I have always liked dell. All depends on what you are going to use it for.

My Gateway is almost 10 years old. Still running on windows 98. My daughter owns a Dell, made here in TN. I'm really confusing myself reading the websites. lol I think I will buy just the tower and keep my old monitor and keyboard.

i build my own ,but cant build it as CHEAP as dell or compac,hp....

before you buy, check on prices from each company.
most new computers will have the new vista system and if you get one with vista make sure it has 1 gig of memory or more..vista is a bigger memory hog than xp from what i've been told...

list of things to get price on.

1. as large cpu.(processor)as you can afford
2. 1gig of memory ,more the bettor
3. 150 gig hard drive or bigger if you are going to save movies/games on it
4.most have onboard video ,,add 128 video card or bigger if you plan to do some highend gameing
5.most have good onboard sound ,,could add sound card if you want to do high tech sound games..

if you have xp already you could just upgrade your motherboard/processer /memory ect and keep your present case if it isnt too out dated..

the best place i found to buy parts at is http://www.geeks.com/

they also have systems ,new and used...

i'm upgrading a computer for one of our drivers and he will have $130 in motherboard/processor/1gig memory..

you can call me after 9pm eastern time on my cell if you want to talk about upgrading what you have...

check out http://www.geeks.com/

they have used towers with/without windows on them around $200-350 and you could ghost(copy) your windows 98 system onto one without windows...if you wanted to keep it on the faster system..or just put your hard drive in the faster system and use the empty hard drive that comes with them for storage..

i use the ground shipping from geeks ,they are in calaforina and to ohio is around 7 days .i order some stuff on july 5 and received it on july 12..

if you order on sat or sunday, they process on monday morning and ship monday evening and receive sat or monday from fedx or you could get 2 -3 day shipping but cost moreeee,,lol

Oh boy

I should probably shut up right now but I've never been one to do that .

I just bought a Dell E521 dou core processor with 320 gig Hard Drive. 1 gig of ram. Had it 25 day when the hard drive started singing like a canary and went plumb plotz. I have been fighting with Dell customer service for days now(actually 2 weeks) and still have no committment to send me another hard drive . The people won't return my call or e-mails. The first guy I talked to said return the whole unit to the retailer for an exchange and if they won't do that then he would put a hard drive in the mail. no problems . Well the retailers have no more of this sale item in stock to exchange and now I can't get the first guy who committed to return any call or e-mails . I am so po'd at Dells customer service right now that I could bite thru nails.

Dells customer service sucks if you are going thru the home computer division. Never mind every time I call I get some Indonesian guy that I can't even understand.

I have put my 10 year old Gateway back on line and never have had any problems with it . It's been updated with a larger hard drive and I use XP Pro on it with office pro added. But with only a 15 gig hard drive it is a little slow with the added software. The brand new dell is sitting in the corner and is little more than junk right now until I can get this problem resolved . I do like the 19 " flat panel monitor I got with the dell but it sure was an expensive monitor!!

I will eventually get this resolved (I hope ) but until I do I am very unhappy with Mr Dell!

Just my story !! everybody has one

Go Dell...you get the most bang for your buck. Also, they're the fastest tech support if you need it. If you like tweaking stuff, might want to build your own. You cant overclock the cpu or memory with a Dell but, with the new Duo-Core processors...it's not even needed. HP isn't bad but they dont give you an OS restore disk. You can still recover your system if something happens...but if the hard drive dies...you have to wait for them to send you a CD in the mail. Bottom line, Dell. In the big sceme of things they have less go wrong with them than the others.

I would look at Gateway, although all I the ones in my house and school are Dells. I needed to purchase a laptop for my daughter per her pharmacy school requirements. I contacted the school and ask the tech support person what computer gave him the least problems and had the best customer support and he stated without a doubt, Gateway. It's pretty common knowledge in the tech sector that Dell has grown too fast for the quality and support to keep up. I don't think they are bad computers, but I also don't believe they are what they use to be. Furthermore, customer support does me no good when I can't understand the person the person on the other end of the line. Outsourcing may save $$, but it can cost customers.

Dell does not offer free tech support, they only offer free tech support if your warranty hasn't expired. I had to pay then $39 dollars just last night, my computor crappe dout, I called and they said " we see your warranty is expired, for $39 we can help you fix the problem." I gave them my credit card number, and he said press F11 adn hold the control key. I did, and that fixed the problem. What a scam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S I didn't get restore disks or a manual with mine, that's how tehy do it now, you have to make your own disks and print out the manual. They did send me a set of restore disks free, but i had to go on line and request them. They would not fix th eproblem, but F11 Ctrl did. scum bags.

do a defrag and clean out the cookies/files in the temp/temp internet folder and add more memory or bigger memory chip if you dont got any more chip slots...this will make the computer faster..the hard drive size dont affect speed as much as excess cookies/ect...xp is a memory hog so if you can add more ,it will help

geeks does do the overnight monday thru friday if you dont care to pay for the extra cost....

i fixed up an older computer for dads girlfriend

it has a 600mghertz p-3 slot one processor
384 meg of p133 memory
win-xp/pro
10 gig hard drive
v92 dialup modem
has all the free openoffice software/messangers
and it does everything she wants it to do

you might be able to update some stuff on yours and make it last a few yrs longer or set it back for a backup and order you a refurblished unit from geeks.com

where you live ?i pass thru nashville to 40 to littlerock to 30 to texas all the time, will be going from texas to del in norcross ga. on monday and should be going back to ohio monday up I-75

call me on my cell and we can talk and see what you got to work with..

you could use your win-98 hard drive in a used unit if you dont want to use/buy the newer windows programs...
