Check out my snazzy new whelping box I had built! I spent just over $100 in materials, and had my boyfriend build it for me (he may not coonhunt, but it sure helps that he's handy with building stuff!!) The interior dimensions are 42"x42". It is lined with waterproof material for ease of cleaning. It is also insulated with that foam board insulation. This thing stays super warm, cozy, and dry!!








And lined with carpet...

Nice whelping box for sure. Just one thing to point out if you don't mind. The bottom of the opening is real close to floor level. Young pups could manage to crawl out and female would have to pick them up and bring them back into box. Some will and some won't. Good luck with whelping your pups. Danny G.

I gotta ask ..... whats the PVC around the inside for??? The only thing I can come up with on my own is maybe to prevent the mother from sufficating the pups in the edge of the box on accident????

Yea, the female is old, she's 12... but she sure loves that box!!

The door is low, but I have a board to go across it. I wanted to be able to have it low so I made it that way.

And yes, the PVC is to keep the pups from getting smushed. I made it PVC instead of wood cause last time I had a litter, the female shredded the wood some to make her nest. That made a mess, plus, the entire inside is waterproof, so I can sanitize everything.

Thats a really well planned out box. Looks like alot of hard work went into that one. Yeah, I would keep that board across the opening to keep pups and bedding in for a few weeks at least. Looks like a nice house.

Believe me I like the looks of the box and it looks like your friend done a great job.

A couple concerns and please keep us posted on results.
1. A dog with a sweet tooth for PVC could chew the rail in a heartbeat.
2.The measurement looks OK but I would be concerned at about two weeks of age when they start moving around that one could climb up on its mom and fall over the rail and catch its head.
3. The mom laying on the rail. Hope it's secured with big washers on the outside.

It looks good..BUT....Theres going to be a problem with the pipe..Most females as they start in labor will chew on anything they can.The pups will also chew on it.I use a 1x4 on top of a 2x4 on its side..Also the door is to close to the floor.Its should be at least 4 inchs from the floor.I even put a 1x4 on its side above that to keep pups in a box until 3 1/2 weeks old..Thats just about the age they start getting around real good.Ive tryed carpet but it stays wet most of the time.So now I use a thin ply wood and replace that when it gets dirty..Most females will keep a box Real clean...Its worked best for me..You can even wash the old ply wood and reuse it...I keep a heat lamp with a reg 100 w light bulb inside a heavy wire cage .To keep pups from getting chilled..I just plug it in when needed..It keeps the average box about 75-80.. A heat lamp bulb is way to hot...My pups will even lay right under the light when its real cold..They can also move away if they are too hot.....

when you wash it out, do you have a drain or just turn it up on the side to drain the water out?

what about the summertime/warm weather? you said it was very warm, but if you have pups in the warm weather is there a way to keep them cool? or do you not breed in the warmer times?

That indeed is a nice box.... only thing I see is teh carpet... I have tried carpet laminate flooring..... EVERYTIME they get ready to have pups they start digging or nesting... the always pull up the carpet and make a total mess of it.... you may wanna keep an eye on that part b/c they will dig at it and get it really frayed and pups can get tangled in it!!!!


But nice box, wish I had it!!!

I have tried the outdoor carpet thing and washed it every other day while a new piece was put in, I used Lysoil Dis. to kill the bacterira But Still got Mastitious from it.

Now I use Astro turf with an open back. very easy to clean and is dry in 1 hr. I need to paint my box with the new Epoxy Garage Floor Coating. "Real Tough" and easy to clean.
PS these pups were born last Sunday (8)

They are Majestic Tree Hounds, Sometimes I get Every Color of Coon hound breeds in the same litter..

But yes they do have a % of Bloodhound in them, We Maintain about 25% Bloodhound in the Breedings.. Cold Cold Nosed.. But Supper Fast on track and tree
