Polyradiculoneuritis is characterized by paralysis that begins in the hindquarters and moves forward, eventually involving the entire body. The disorder was first observed in coondogs and thus is called coonhound paralysis. The cause of the disease is unknown, but about half of affected dogs have been bitten or scratched by a coon 1 to 2 weeks before paralysis appears.
Most dogs with coonhound paralysis recover fully, although a few develop permanent wasting of some muscles. Mildly affected dogs recover within a few days, while recovery in severely affected dogs may take several months.
No immunity results from the disease, and recovered dogs may be affected again at a later date.
Vet gave my dog steroids and anitbotics. Usually starts with the dog getting hoarse, a slight limp, then they go down pretty quick. I went to one of the vet websites and looked up coonhound paralysis, it was very helpful with the syptoms. Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital's website is where I got some info. Jessica
