March CB and Full Cry Article

Sorry. For some reason this did not appear in Full Cry this month. Posted here for the weekend then I'll move it to the CF page of the website under news.

UKC Cur / Feist Program News
Todd Kellam

Two important announcements this month that affect the cur / feist program. One is in regards to single registration. We are expanding the list of those individuals approved to inspect dogs to include all licensed Hunt Masters and Cur / Feist Bench Show Judges. This will be in addition to those previously approved to inspect dogs and sign off on the single registration form. By inspecting dogs I’m referring to the policy that if you have an approved inspector signature on the single registration application, it is not necessary to also include photos of the dog nor proof of registry with an approved breed club. Proof of registry with an approved breed club still must be shown to the breed inspector but the inspector may sign off on the fact that the dog does meet it’s breed standard and has shown proof of registry for those breeds that have that as a requirement.

This change should really help out all of the clubs holding events. It will simply be a matter of checking the UKC website on the Cur / Feist homepage to find a list of licensed officials. Make arrangements to have one at your event and you will not be required to take photos of those dogs applying for single registration.

This might be an appropriate place for a reminder regarding licensed officials. You are not required at this stage of the game to have a licensed hunt master oversee the hunt portion of your event. We are in the process of licensing hunt masters so that down the road when it does become a requirement, we will have a good number of licensed hunt masters in place. You are, on the other hand, required to have a licensed cur / feist bench show judge officiate a licensed bench show. Anyone interested in applying for either license is encouraged do so by contacting United Kennel Club.

Next, I’m very happy to get to announce this next bit of news. I tipped my hand on this slightly in my new year’s resolutions column but now it is official. UKC Cur / Feist Field Representative Eugene Hill will be taking on some additional responsibilities for the C/F program with UKC. One of the things Eugene is going to be helping us with is coordinating qualifying events for the new UKC World Championship program. Additionally, he will be helping me to do this column for Full Cry and he will offer UKC more of a presence on all the cur dog message forums among other things.

I totally agree with those of you that have taken the time to write or call requesting more of a UKC contact person presence from within the C/F ranks. Eugene will give us exactly that and I can’t think of a better person for the job. Those of you that know Eugene personally know what I’m talking about. Those of you that don’t should look forward to any dealings you have with him. I’ve personally known and worked with Eugene for many years dating back to the days he held office for the Alabama State Coonhunters Association and I’ve always found him to be down to earth and professional at the same time.

We would ask that you continue to call UKC direct for scheduling events, registration concerns, licensed official needs, and things of that nature. But feel free to contact Eugene with any thoughts or concerns you have regarding the program as he will have more of a roll in helping UKC work on some of these challenges. Now, that being said, it does not in anyway lessen the opportunity for Field Reps Owen Brayson (MS) and Marty Stanton (IN) to help you in the same respect. Both of those individuals do an excellent job for UKC as well and can be contacted with any of your concerns.

Watch this column next month for complete details regarding the new UKC World Squirrel Dog Championship. Oh, and as far as those resolutions go? Three down, four to go!
