My Pup Caught Up With The Rascal Lastnight

We released a coon last night for our 6 month old Bluetick. We've already turned a couple out for her over the last couple of weeks and they actually ran a good ways, about 300 yards. She treed both just as pretty as we could have asked for. Last night, we did the same thing and waited a while before turning her out. The coon had plenty of time to make a decent getaway. Then, we got her out of the box and turned her out. She struck and took off up the trail into the woods. A couple of minutes later we heard her yellin' in the woods and she came trottin' back out to us.... with a bloody nose. She caught up with the dirty rascal and he popped her on the nose. Of course, the first thing I thought was D*MN because I've always heard never let the coon get hold to a puppy. We didn't know what else to do (never had this happen) so we sent her back in, but we followed her to make sure it didn't happen again. She got right back in on the trail, but we called her off when she started getting away from us because I didn't want her to catch up with it again.

After this happened, we turned her out in a different location near some feeder buckets and she went out a started hunting around. We don't expect a lot from her at this point - she's only 6 months old - but to our surprise, she opened on a trail and started trailing her little heart out. She had never opened on a wild coon before then. She never did tree, but she was trying so hard. We praised her and called it a night after a while. Do you think she'll be okay? I hope that coon didn't ruin her. From the way she acted last night, it may have put some drive into her. She's a feisty little thing. We shot the others out dead to her and she dove right in and started growling and shaking em (after we made sure they were dead, of course), so maybe she'll be just fine. Give me your thoughts on this......

I think she'll be just fine. Sometimes with the feisty ones they want that ole coon even more after something like this happens...I think you did the right thing by sending her back in and then taking her somewhere else to hunt....But always remember when you are taking her at 6 months old and she does something right to put her in the box and let her think about it for a couple days....Glad your pup is doing well, good luck and keep us posted!
