When I first started hunting, I hunted out of the trunk of my car.
I hauled my dogs everywhere in my car. I could not afford two vehicles at the time. I had one vehicle, and I used it for everything.

Finally I bought a 48 chevrolet pick-up truck. I had never heard of, or seen a store bought dog box. I built a frame around the bed of my truck out of 2X6's, and covered the frame with plywood.
Slats were at each corner, and fit into the slots on the inside of the pick up bed. You could set it off....if you had enough help.
The tail gate of my truck was the door, and all of the dogs went inside. No compartments.....just the bed of the truck. The side of the bed were the walls and the plywood provided shelter and kept the wind out. Man, I thought I was up town....no more hunting out of my car...I had a rig..a 48 chevy with a plywood lid over the bed.

Yup , plywood box here too.
And then we stepped up and I built a plywood " tool box " for my dads truck. When his buddies seen that , they started bringing me materials ! LOL
I think I built about 20 of them the first year ! LOL

First box I got I bought off a guy, it was solid 3/4 treated plywood, weighed about 100# and BARELY would squeeze between the fenderwells of my Ranger, had to put it on top of them then sit on it to make it slide down in there, it was also about 6 inches taller than my back glass so I learned quickly how to use my mirrors lol. Bought that box and a walker pup 10 mons. old out of Alabama River Rock for $50, started that slick treeing pup and a guy offered me $350 for him and he was GONE! Got me a blue dog and havn't looked back since, that was nearly 8 years ago...Man how the time flies. The box has rotted away, but the Blue dog just keeps ticking!

haha now thats a good one Craig....Interesting, When you gonna let this ol Hammer bred dog of mine breed one of them good gyps off your ol' Cheif dog? Should be a good cross lots of old Hammer up close..........

No, he would probably tell me to load her up, and he'll pray while I drive. LOL!!!!!!

After he bred her, he would be rejoicing because his prayers have been answered!!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!

my first dog box was a old beat up red mullins. it had been sitting in the man's yard for 5 years, needed a new floor, and a top in the top storage. door were rusted shut. so I got it for $25. put new hinges and latches on the doors, put new top and bottom, and then saved up a few dollars and baught a Brand New mullins, and thats what i have now. the old red one was sold for $50, and is still in use! i guese i fixed er good.

Built the first several boxes I had. In fact the one that sits in my truck now is the first manufactured box I ever had. I bought that one used from Boughton.



I will never forget one time when I was a little kid. There was an old man in worn out overalls, climb out of a beat up Chevy truck, and take a bird dog out of a plywood box. I asked the old man they were getting ready to hunt on who he was...................



IT WAS SAM WALTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard he wore out 3 engines in that truck.

Craig, the first box i had was a 1960 Studebaker truck with Plywood covering the whole bed and covered with a vinyle [ dont know if i spelled that right ] covering and like yours the tailgate was the door, no seperater, just loaded all dogs in the back. i could unsnap both my dogs and they would all race to jump in. lol

My first box was built out of old 2x4's , partial sheet of used chipboard for a bottom, Old barnwood off of a old corncrib and corragated roofing off the old corncrib and 2 galvanized old refrigertor racks for doors. My mom said son you are never gonna be a carpenter and you know what she was surely right!! That was when i was 15 years young . amazing how 31 years seems like yesterday LOL!! And I hauled it behind my 1941 allis chalmbers B in a old 2 wheel trailer I still own today. Those were the days and I loved every minute of hand cranking that old tractor to drive around the neigborhood to the cornfields and creeks it sure beat the heck out of walking.My mom would always say i was crazy but you know what they didn't have to worry about where I could be found only about when i was coming home!!

I took an old Air Conditioner (window unit) that was pretty good size----no bottom, then took a sawzall, a road sign, and some pop rivets to make the fourth side/door. It worked pretty dang good and STILL makes one heck of a beagle box!!! That was about 10 years ago---13 y/o, no money, no driver's license, but I had a 4 wheeler and that's what that box was strapped to!!!

my first one, was the dogs, dog house. I had stapled a short chain to the back of his house with a snap on it. Then I put the dog house in the back of my dads truck, when I went.

My first dog box was, I took two 55gal plastic blue barrels and bolted them together down the center and the ends were cut out and built the doors out of 3/4" plywood we added hinges and locks, then drilled 3/4" holes in the doors for vents and down the sides of the barrels, also made some rope handles for easy loading and unloading. Once loaded in a 1966 chevy pick-up we straped it down added some hay for comfort to the dogs, and a way we went to the woods. I used this style of box for years.

How about Sam Walton using a plywood box? Probably could not afford anything else! LOL!

It's not a disgrace to be poor, but sometimes it is kind of inconvienent!!
