I just feed him regular, but he does have a heated water bucket so he has plenty of access to water if he has the guts to come out of his house and drink it.

I've been mixing warm water for mine to the last couple of days. don't know if this is better but makes me feel better. LOL! I have heated water pails for my dogs and I've broke 2" of ice off them twice already today. IT'S COLD!

It doesn't get cold enough here to be worth it, but I think that sounds like a good idea for those of you in really cold climates.

I just go out once or twice a day (depending on how cold it is) and pour fresh hot water into their water dishes. It stays warm long enough for them to get a good drink before it starts to freeze, even on our coldest days. If it will freeze over in a couple hours, I do it twice; if it will take all day or all night to freeze over, then I only do it once. I do the same for our sheep.

The downside to feeding wet food is that it's not as good for their teeth. However, dehydration is worse for a dog than a little plaque, so if it helps keep your dog watered in the winter, then it's probably a good idea.

I have never fed any of my dogs wet feed. Not pups, not old dogs. My vet has always told me that feeding it dry is better for their teeth. All my dogs get fresh water twice daily no matter how cold it gets.

I too "swell" my dogs food in the cold winter months. I add extra water to it just before I walk out the door so they will have enough water with the feed. Mine love it and I feel better too. When we have a break in the weather is when I will give dry feed. I also make sure to give them hot water buckets but with in an hour or so they are solid blocks, so with the wet feed I know they are getting water before it freezes.

I don't soak, but I think they would digest it better and would get more out of the food.

We do, when it's cold. I THINK it helps ensure they get a little extra water in their system, in case they didn't get enough water before it froze....dang is it cold here. 8*....-20* wind chill. The hounds act like they appreciate a warm meal and it makes me feel better knowing they had a little extra moisture in their system. Letting them get dehydrated will make their body temp drop also....just a few thoughts....

I feed mine dry because if they don't eat it all it will be froze solid. I use heated water bowls so that's no problem. It's 6,4 below zero right now.

I feed mind wet with hot water year round. Always have. Just a little during the none freezing months and more during the cold weather. I don't let it soak , just make it a hot moist meal for them.

its minus 4 with a windchill of -25 right now here. I've been soaking my food in hot water that way I know they are getting water and they eat it all when you give it to them I think it warms them up a bit for awhile. its suppose to stay this way for a week. makes me feel better knowing I'm doing what I can to warm them up and get them water.
