We are in the process of reorganizing a club that has been around for a long time but hasn't held an event in 3 yrs. We've been officers and/or members of several dog clubs for many years and we got sick and tired of members coming to the meetings to vote-in and argue about things they never help with or participate in. Because of that, we decided to run our club with an executive committee consisting of people who are willing to help out whenever and wherever possible, and who are interested in the longevity and success of the club and its events.
We haven't completed our new by-laws yet, but I think we'll have a non-voting (or supporting) membership open to anyone, and then a voting membership open only to people who are willing to help.
I belonged to one dog club where you had to have 2 members in good standing nominate you for membership, plus attend 3 meetings to become a member. Then you had to participate on a committe or help at a certain number of events during the year to remain a voting member.
I think something like this is the way to go to insure a successful club and events, especially when you have a relatively small membership anyhow and the same handful of people who always run everything.
