So it's a double edged sword. When you "teach" the dog to stay on the first tree then you commonly end up with a slick treeing hound on long feeder tracks or when boars start rutting. The dogs that have it naturally or figure it out naturally will be the most accurate.
To answer your question: When tracking your hound mark the places he trees. Then check each tree starting with the first unit you find a coon. Now go get your dog and take him to that tree. Work him on the tree, and shoot the coon out. I would then suggest leading to the next tree, to look for a coon. After you find a second coon, shoot it out. Then lead him off the way the track goes and turn him loose. You should continue walking his track until he starts trailing again. See how he does with the rest of the track.
This is a lot of work and opens the opportunity to create some other bad habits. I personally would suggest to keep hunting him and use this after he's clearer not figured it out on his own. JMO
