I got a chance to hunt with Dolan and Pat Shellady one nite. Old Sam really put it on Bandit. He took a track off the river and treed it while the Bandit dog was still trying to trail along the river bank. Then Dolan cut Sam back toward Bandit, and sam took the track away from him again and treed the 2nd coon. He was a very nice track dog.
The above NEVER HAPPENED. "Dan Dogs" must have some other black dog in mind. Wow, this is a blast from the past. A friend of mine back in the Midwest had emailed me a link to this thread this a/m. I no longer coon hunt and don't live in the Midwest anymore. Western upland birds and English setters is my game.
I owned Bandit and did pleasure hunt with Dolan and Sam 2 times, this was a one-on-one. First time, Bandit pretty much took it to Sam, though ole' Sam still looked really pretty good. 2nd time, I'll admit to Sam slightly outdoing the black dog, but absolutely nothing like described above By Dan Dogs. In fact, first face off it was just Dolan and me...2nd time a buddy of mine was along...and his name wasn't "Dan Dogs" . Dolan was very complimentary and told me (and others) that Bandit was, in his words "a tough cookie". That old black dog could be pretty good at times.
I've always said that I'd put $$$ up and go head to head with Sam anywhere, anytime...but would hate to go 2 out of 3 against him Sam was beatable, but didn't get beat often, good nose, hunted out hard and wasn't afraid to get alone and get treed. Incredibly consistent
I also judged Sam 2-3 times. Fleetwood Sam was a powerhouse and one of the very best hounds. He was World Champion material. Solid, tough and could tree a coon in horrid conditions. Dolan had an unfortunate death during a mule ride and I believe Sam died fairly young, 8 or 9 yr old. I think jealousy in the treeing walker world prevented this dog from being bred to a lot.
I drew that Slife Lucky dog once and got beat fair and square. Hunted several times with Big Creek Spud - a very good dog. Put it pretty hard to the Kirby "Buzz" or "Spike" dog (don't remember) one night and man was Mr. Kirby pissed...hunted a Jeff Nelson female "Star" against that Wessels Clover dog on a very bad weather night, I think he won the cast.
Platner's Mash was a very steady and consistent dog.
The Chainsaw dog was about 25 miles north of me. I did hunt with him but don't remember much about it. He did win Walker Days one year.
There was a fairly good Grand Nite ch. walker from Oelwein, but gawd **** the owner (can't remember his name) was a crybaby. "Dave" somebody, I think. Beat him once in a qualifying hunt and that guy bitched about it for a year. Drew out again next year and beat him again, thought the guy was going to start crying. He had a pretty good dog but sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
Either guided or judged Terry Daniels Willie and I recall he looked extremely good. Probably another overlooked Walker stud.
Jeff Nelson's original Buck was pretty good, hunted with Buck II about a week after Jeff got him, he looked pretty good and he ended up being a World Champion.
Jeff entrusted the old "Nig" dog to me during a kill season. What a nice and pleasurable dog he was, just a no nonsense dog that treed a bunch of coon.
Jeff looks like he's still at it and the B & T breed is lucky to have him.
I used to hunt a bunch with Merlin Hershberger and he had some very nice dogs. "Jimmy" won a bunch of trophies.
There was a guy named Dick Burkett that had an extremely tough Walker male, "Rock" I think. Won a record number of 2nd places and I dont' think ever finished to Nite champion. This was a good dog and could have the meat in nasty, cold conditions. I think he was a grandson of both Finley River Chief and Kaw River Chief
Guided Bellar's Striker in an old PCA hunt and watched him run a deer for 2 hours, 59 minutes and still win the cast with a coon treed in the last minute.
Dale Green's "Zip" dog: hunted with her one night in late march, we took Zip out alone. Absolutely the fastest track dog that I've ever seen - bar none. Struck 3 tracks and she caught 3 sow coon on the ground. I told Dale to put her up, no reason killing the seedstock. Never did see her tree, though
There were several good dogs back in the 80's. I don't follow the hound world much anymore...those UKC hunts have pretty much died out, haven't they?
FREEMAN...you're not "Jim" Freeman, are you?
