how far do you swim a young dog for a good work out?
how many nights a week?

Be careful with a young one. They get tired faster than you may think, and will keep going until you stop them. I about lost a lab pup I was working on. Threw a ball out several times and she just loved to go in after it. Last time I threw it she jumped right in like all the rest of the times, made it about 1/2 to it and you could see the fear in her eyes as she tried to make it back. Needless to say I had to jump in and get her out.

It's just hard to say. Every pup is different. I'd just take it easy with him, make sure it's fun for him. He will let you know when he has had enough. My best advice is be prepared to go in after him if need be.

he was on a lead its walkable for the pup in most places
but 3- feet in spots iam thinking about walking it and fishing
the pot holes

How old is the pup and how cold is the water your in?

it was 92 here last sat but the water was cool.
prob. 4 car loads of people swiming that is why we had him
on a lead. the pup is about 12 weeks 3 mth.

At that age don't let him over do it. and be sure you can get to him if he shows sign of fatigue. Most hounds won't overdo it like a lab so he should be able to set his own pace. I would also be careful about being around a public swimming hole at that age his mothers immunity is wearing off and his immunity isn't quite what it needs to be so be leary of Parvo and distemper. When I was a vet tech in greenville NC I saw tons of puppies w/parvo mainly becouse people took their pups to parks around the river and places like that.
