Judging question. You be the Judge....

4 Night Champions from the turn out head across a small swamp and come bayed on a big ole Logger head......
What do you do and what is UKC's stance on this one.
This just recently happened here locally.
I'll give you the judges decision and how it stood up later.
Just wanted to have some fun.
I had a different opinion myself. But what do I know.

Have at it guys. A friend of a friend that was on the cast wanted me to poll you guys.

Big snapping turtle, usually an alligator snapper.

Well you can't scratch them on a turkey, so maybe the turtle was standing on the track.LOL

Blast from the past,

A buddy was on a NtCh. cast, they just scored a tree, by a crick, all dogs on the leashes, leading away from the tree. A bull frog jumped out of the grass from between his dogs legs, she stopped, startled and let out a howl, Yep,

Scratched for opening on Off Game,

Why not? Off game is anything that is not a coon in my book.

It is UKC's official position that since a turkey flies up into the tree the dogs did not track it to the tree nor are they treeing on scent it left going up the tree. Therefore a turkey is not considered off game.

I guess it's just an incidental finding!! LOL.

Is a Logger Head off Game? I know of no game laws pertaining to the Logger Head (Alligator Snapping Turtle) I thought at one time they were a protected species, but I am not sure about that now. My grand dad said they were some fine eating.

I really do not know of many people that go out and hunt them. So, I would not actually call them a game species. So, if I do not classify them as game(wild animal taking for human consumption) how could I classify them has off game.

Just food for thought, and No pun intended.

Why would 4 NITECHs be baying a Logger Head and not coon??? Off game, turtles, snakes, a spider. It's still not a coon.
I say they should be scratched.

I did not write the rules it clearly states off game. What is game? I sure am not going to eat no spiders. You can have my share.

If it was my dog. I would say the turtle probably ate the coon. That is how good my dog is.

I am not saying I would not whoop my hound for baying a turtle. For the sake of discussion a turtle is not game. The rule clearly states off game.

Just my two cents. Would I question being scratched for baying a logger head turtle? No, but I could make a MOH scratch his head and think twice if I wanted to.

SIMPLE SOLUTION

.. from a Non comp person even....
Here is the scoop.. the coon the four hounds are indeed tracking.... has crossed the swamp and.... it has used the turtle as a resting spot.... thinking it is a rock. Just a quick break for the tired coon, run SO hard by the 4 hounds. The turtle decideds it has had enough and it EATS the coon. The trac indeed has ended here...in the turtle.
The solution to this question is to do an Autopsy on the turtle!
I cannot Believe all you Experienced hunters didn't come up with this solution first.
AS for game... I KNOW I'd eat turtle, ate it as a child... so I'd say it ccould be considered game. However I would KILL myslef before I would be FORCED to eat any form of spider!
I hope that I have made the UKC aware of the need for experienced Turtle vets to be on hand at Each Comp hunt that will cross any wetlands!
Heather William Expert.... on something

Have no clue where Webster FL is... but, when we had our summer house on the keys... we used to go into the mangrove aLOT exploring and such.... those spiders can catch fish and EAT BIRDS! I would cary a gun to prtect myself from the spiders! Shudderrrrrrrrr!
PS My maiden name is Webster (as well the silly AKC B and T of my son's CAME with the name Webster)! SO- everytime I see that on your profile it makes me smile.
OK, I will now leave this post for you Serious hunters...

If you don't scratch a dog on turkeys because they fly up to the roost why are dogs scratched on flying squirrels when I'm sure they probably jumped from tree to tree ---same thing and it sure will scratch a dog----I still say anythnig that shouldnt be run or bayed is scratchable and not take the term "GAME" literal from DNR.
