dogs impregnated by another breed

I have a question regarding what to do or what remedies are available for a hound that was impregnated by another breed of hound. Is there any way to get the dog to abort the litter and if so what are potential reprecussions to the hound as a result? I have heard that there is a shot you can give the dog so that she will abort the litter. Is this true and who should I contact regarding this?

Yes, there is a shot. But most vets are very reluctant to give it and are reluctant to say anything about it.They want to spay your dog.Some dont understand I only know one vet in my area who will give them that shot and I can't rember what is called. I had a Beagle who got breed by a walker and I had one heck of a time getting here taken care of.

Ray, what got bred to what? There are quite a few famous dogs out there because of that very thing.

a walker got bred by a bluetick.

Are they good ones?

The B & T's are benefitting from a little shot of holstein. Maybe this is the next Rock for the bluetick world!!!

the walker seems to have a good bloodline, not sure about the bluetick

they say the shot can mess them up from breeding again

that is what I have heard as well...I am wondering what to do seeing how the dogs involved are from two different breeds....

The shot has to be given within the first 72 hours of breeding, and it will keep them in heat another 3 weeks.

All veterinarians are not always trying to spay your hounds. Giving that "shot" is malpractice in my opinion. If you do not want to spay the female the healthiest thing you can do is let her have the pups and make sure you keep her up next time she comes in heat. You can take care os the pups anyway you see fit. That is not a choice anyone can make for you. Veterinarians take an oath to do no harm. I take it very seriously and will not use this drug at all because of the potential harm it can do.

sounds like reasonable advice...who would take these dogs then if she were to have them?

The shot is lutlyse. It used to bring cattle and other animals into heat. It says right on the bottle not to be handled by women of child bearing age cause it can cause abortions in people. How much to give and what repruccions it'll have, I don't know. When it needs to be given, Iam not sure either, but in cattle we'll give it at all different stages of pregnancy to abort the cow.

If she has the pups, do you know any big game hunters? Most are willing to run a mix breed with no problem. And I have seen coondog lines run big game. I had a granddaughter of Babe's Stylish Banjo and Maggard's Stylish Jet who was running cats for us until she was killed. We have a bluetick pup from MI that is running bear for us in California.. Our best dogs is a walker/bluetick...it really makes a good combo for someone who papers are not important too.

I've heard real horror stories about the shot. I think the street name is "mis-mate." I wouldn't use it after what I've heard. If you look at the health sections of a lot of hound & dog forums, you'll see lots of tales of infection, dead bitches, bitches that had to be spayed afterwards, barren bitches, and all sorts of problems. I would sooner risk having puppies that had to be put down than risk the mis-mate shot.

That being said, you probably can find homes for the puppies if you price them cheap and don't plan to make any money off the litter. Check out the multiple coonhound forums all over the web. Lots of people run mixed breed hounds, and I've even talked to some people who will ONLY run mixed breeds or unregistered dogs because they feel they're better dogs (although I disagree). A UKC forum is probably not your best bet since most of us naturally care about papers. But coonhound central (http://www.coonhounds.com/Classifieds/) and coondawgs.com are a couple of places you could start.

Super Stake the male and register them.Then sale them as crossbreeds!

I say don't use the shot.I used it twice and both times it messed the dog up. The last was messed up so bad she had to be spayed later. She made a good coon dog, but we can't raise pups from her.

Sounds like a good litter to get some kids into the sport.

If you know of any youngsters just dying to get their hands on a coonhound pup these might be the answer. No they would not be eligible for the UKC hunts unless someone went through the trouble of single registering them but PKC would be open to them.
Also a kid would be a good out as they could make mistakes on these pups without messing up to to much.

If these pups turn out they could be single reg.Depending on color,walker bluetick,or english.

Several years ago I used the shot several times and never had any problems. Over the years it got harder and harder to get a vet to give it, and these days I really have not had a need for it, but I did not have any problems with it. And yes, most every vet I know, is always trying to get me to spay any dog I take in.

I know I am going to catch alot of grief over this, but I just find it ironic that a Veterinarian who "takes an oath to do no harm" and they "take it very seriously", yet the advise is to do to the pups as the owner sees fit. Does this include killing the pups? What about shooting coon out to a dog to help with the training? Does this include deer hunting or turkey hunting? Is this "taking the oath seriously". I am not down on anyone for hunting, I do it , but to claim one thing as a professional and do the opposite is pretty contradictatory. Just happened to read this and found it interesting. JMO, another reason to watch out for people who talk out of both sides of their mouths. I am sure the moderators will delete this post, but I feel these are valid questions. "The shot" seems to be alot more humane way to handle the situation. But what do I know! Maybe pushing spaying over "the shot" has more to do with finances. I'm sure a spay cost alot more than a shot. Again, JMO, and I am not trying to belittle anyone.

we had a walker bluetick mix once, turned out nicely but wasnt what i expected. every dog is different though

My advice

let her whelp them & give them away to some kids, looking to get into the sport or you can always 'dispose' of them at birth. Made hubby do that last year with a litter of Plott/mutt crosses.
I didn't have the heart or kahoonas to do the 'deed'.
