Leafy Trees

Hey yall, just came in from hunting and the trees are getting so dang full of leaves here in Ohio that you cant see branches much less a coon.....so whats yall's secret to seein the coon in the tree in the summer time? or do you just count the tree as a circle and wait until fall to hunt?.....

I've got two different squallers I use. I feel that if a coon is there, I've got a good chance of him looking with one of those squallers.

The coons are much easier to see if they are there .... but , it does help to try and shine way out from the tree with a low light ... real bright lights will cause them to turn their head .

Lots of times if you can't find them you need to look right up the trunk and squall , shake limbs and such .... boar coon are especially bad about hiding in forks in the summer .

Xenon or LED bulbs are the very best for making eyes glow ... even with all the leaves on you should find at least 2/3 of a dog's coon , if not .... you may try some adjustments.

I like a red cover lens on low light.

I squall without a squaller. Low light, beat on the tree and pull vines when they are present...Seems to work good for me

I was hunting a couple years ago and my dog got treed on one of them trees that is dang near impossible to shine until you have cleared enough underbrush to make a hole to shine the tree through.
I was breaking over a couple small trees when I glanced up and seen the coon was looking right at me.
Ever since then I started breaking dead sticks over my knee while keeping my light on low and have found that the sound of breaking sticks will often get a coon to look when all else fails.

As a matter of fact,I would like some others on here to try it and post whether or not it works as well for you.

Or the coons around here are a lot smarter in the winter than the summer. I have a harder time finding coon in the winter, they know the leaves are off and will not look. Summer time they just look right off the bat, most of the time.

You should try hunting in Fl or south MS. For the most part the leaves are never fully off. A lot of evergreens and the oak leaves just dry up and never fully fall off until the spring growth. Now that im up in the northern part of LA we atleast have a month or so with the leaves off but theres still a lot of evergreen trees.
