Question About Heat Cycle...
My brother has a red dog that just had her first heat cycle and for some reason the male dogs won't leave her alone. Her going-out week was the weekend of walker days. Why are the males still bothering her?

First cycles don't always follow the normal "pattern"...they frequently last quite a bit longer than "normal"....
I would keep her away from the males for a little longer...are the males young too?

Well...
We hunted her with 1 male and yes he was young. The male was 14 mo. old and he was the one bothering her. My male at home who is 2 years didn't try to mount her, he just smelled her and then he left her alone. Also when the 14 mo. old dog mounted her she growled and tried to bite him, so I don't think he got her in the woods. Or at least I hope NOT!!!

Pueberty is hell.....even in dogs..
I think the 14 month old male needs a lesson in how to behave around perfumed females....

Alittle lemon juice and a wash cloth will take care of your problems. If she wouldn't let the 14 month old fool with her, she's done. Wash her off and the smell will go away, especially with the lemon juice, or any soap will due for that matter. Clean her up and go hunting.
male pups at that age will hump around on almost anything it seems. Since your older male didn't want much to do with her, I wouldn't worry about her being bred. I think its pretty unlikely.
O.K.
Thanks for lending me your knowlege. It helped to calm my brother down.(He REALLY DOES NOT want puppies. Espically from a walker and redbone cross.) Thanks again everybody!!!!

in heat
I have a buddy that has used axle grease to take away the smell. I was told that the males will not mess with a female in full blown heat with that stuff. Never tried it for my female but was told it would work.

we used to put vucks in a stud horses nostril so he couldn't smell a mare in heat but let a mare stand for a stud and he will breed her vicks and all what makes you think a male dog won't mount a standing female

axle grease
Like I said Wayne, that is what a buddy had done before and said it worked. I have not seen it so I cannot say it will or will not work!
