catching coons on the ground

well last night was a first for me and I've been Coon hunting for about 15 years. an old gyp I haven't had long or hunted a whole lot caught a coon on the ground las night. Just wondering if you guys have ever had this happen and your thoughts on it. I've always heard of some dogs being able to me personally I don't care much for it I like hearing a good race and walking to a tree. And the dog is a 10-year-old walker

Ground

Been coon hunting 60 years and can recall three. One coon lost paw in a trap and I assumed he Could not climb. Second was in a marsh. Dogs would pressure the coon and it would back under a wad of marsh grass (did not have agood kill dog). I would catch up grab the dogs and the coon would take off. This happened 3 or 4 times and I was tired of marching through the marsh grass so took the dogs home.

Ive been coonhunting for over 50 years and in my experience a silent dog will catch alot of coon on the ground although I've had open dogs catch them too. Alot of variables in it some open dogs get smart after they catch a couple on the ground and learn to be more quiet so to speak so they can sneak up on them.i had a silent female years ago that caught several on the ground and would kill them.if you heard her catch one you better get to her fast because she would be after another one when she was finished with the 1st one.the thing that amazed me about her was she had broken a front leg in the joint when she was young and was not near as fast as she would of been had that not happened.

Yep, I have done it myself.

It may happen more then some think because if you don't have one that wants to end it they may just tree on the edge of the woods after they push it there, be it a swamp or corn field.


This fall I'm a little worried becasue we have distemper in the raccoons and they are not running from any hound or hunter. The CO's I have talked to said its bad this year.

Love to hunt the cattails after it freezes and safe to go out. Some great races and good training for a young hound-- BUT NOT A PUP!

You hunt along enough you will tree one on a corn stalk, highline pole and even catch one on the ground with a wide open hound.`

OLD TIMER

I had a good female that caught 2 different coon on the ground last fall. Each was a different hunting trip but in the same area. 2 weeks after she caught the 2nd coon she died in the pen.
You didn't ask my opinion, but I would get her checked if you have a vet that will help you

There was a fellow on this forum a couple of years ago that said he had a dog that caught about one a week. He went on to say it wasn't the fastest dog he had. He just knew how to catch them. I thought he might see this and comment.

Had tight mouth dogs catch a lot of possums on the ground but after 25 years of hunting I’ve never caught a coon on the ground only time had it happen if they pull em out of holes in the ground, a lot of holes here in Tennessee so they’ve done that a few times over the years

My dog caught one swimming in a swamp.

It's really hard for me to imagine anyone who has hunted for several years that hasn't caught multiple coon on the ground. May have a lot to do with where you hunt. The dog I currently hunt will sometimes just come in with a coon in his mouth. Also have caught a lot of coon in water holes. It's certainly not an every night occurrence but not really surprising when we catch one on the ground.

I have caught several on the ground since moving to South Dakota.
Didn’t catch meat as many when I lived in Ohio. The difference in the number of trees to climb is like Night and day. But, out here I have had several that would not climb even when hard pressed and with opportunity; just seem to rather run than climb.
