Persimmon trees
Got a young dog this is his first season been hunted probably 15 to 20 times almost completely alone has treed a couple coon but the last 2 weeks every time I turn him loose he ends up bein by the only puddle of water in the woods on a slick persimmon tree usually not much bigger then a bush and him barkin like he’s lookin at it what would you do? I have been just sendin him on but he just ends up on another one somewhere and it’s startin to get old

Lol. It's really not funny at all, but this is a young dog that does not have the experience. The only way he gets experience is to hunt him, scold or switch him off every time he trees a slick tree and put him on after the track. Many experienced dogs slick on persimmon trees and that's a fact. Like it or not, persimmons hold a lot of scent and many dogs are fooled by treeing a slick persimmon, or at least I have seen this over my 60 plus years of coon hunting. I have only owned 1 dog in my life that never treed a slick persimmon tree and many that did that were HIGHLY accurate on every other kind of tree in the woods. Dave

Thanks I’m about ready to take a chainsaw with me and cut all of um down lol I have had many to slick on persimmons but not to this extent literally probably the last 20 trees Iv walked too he got lucky on one that leaned into an oak and the coon was sittin up there other then that all slick

Depending on how young he is, sounds like you definitely need to get his attention that you don't like what he's doing. If you don't want to take that method, I would lay him up until the coon have stopped feeding on the persimmon s
Not a bad idea on layin him up yeah I don’t want to get on him to hard he just started treein not long before all this started

I was always told that the persimmons mask the coons scent and doesn’t leave much scent leaving the tree and quickly disappears making the dog think the track ended there. Another possibility is that there are multiple coon feeding on the same persimmon tree so there is more scent in the air than there is going away from the tree. Most dogs will slick on persimmons. One year there were a lot of persimmons and not much else to eat around my house. I found out that year where all of the persimmon trees were at around here and never saw a coon above the dogs in any of them. Lol.

Persimmon trees ….. the Coon gets them on their feet while eating them . Therefore not leaving much scent when they leave . Even a world champion would tree slick on a persimmon sometimes . Keep hunting bud he ain’t doing nothing that any other hound wouldn’t do .

IDEA?
Put a mobile cell camera at the base of persimmon tree and when you catch him climbing go go go and just maybe you can catch him up there eating supper!

I once treed 2 possums and 1 coon in a persimmon tree. I don't know if my dog treed the possums or the coon. I didn't know whether to pet him or whip him.
I would have shot one of each out and see which one he went for lol

I have seen the same thing happen a lot with wild grapes and mulberries. Dogs seem to have a hard time smelling where they went.
