Rule question

The rule states that a cast may advance to a dog that is in a hole but not declared treed. Does that mean the cast must go to the dog that is not declared treed and has nothing on the scorecard except strike points.

About the only time a cast will let you handle a dog in the ground is if the majority of the casts dogs are there. Otherwise more than likely they will force you to tree your dog in hopes the dog will leave and take minus. You can hold out and make them put the stationary on your dog. Yes the rule is you don't have to tree them but good luck.

Rule says "may" not "must". That is pretty self explanatory. You can try to convince the cast to just let you go get your dog; or tree your dog and force them to go, or not tree your dog and make them put the stationary on your dog. Of course, a majority of the cast can say that your dog is not in a hole, put the stationary on it and force you to tree your dog.
A handler needs to know his dog. Is it in a hole or not? Will it stay in a hole? Will it leave when it sees you coming? Will it tree a possum in a hole? Will you be able to see the possum? A lot can run through your mind in that situation. Just know that the other handlers are thinking about all of the possibilities also.
