distemper

what say yall, twra has posted sickness in coon population where i live, some are saying rabies, which i highly doubt, but a few have been tested for canine distemper, my dogs are current on vac, that being said anybody ever had issues hunting through a distemper outbreak, not really worried about the ones that i tree i feel they are healthy, but if dog encounter one on the ground an get bit. they havent posted it yet but i think its in the coyotes as well, several found dead. opinions??

Years ago probably 10 here in middle Tennessee that fall I remember two instances where the dogs were out hunting and I was walking through the woods and saw a coon sitting and stumbling around drunk seemingly, on the ground I walked up to it 20 feet maybe with my light on him and he seemed like he didn’t know I was in the world. Same situation both times, the old timers said it was distemper but I don’t know.

Distemper kills a coon pretty quick so it normally looks to be in good shape, just dead. Rabies kills over week to months, leaving the coon looking like it died a long, slow death; ie, skinny, bad hair, etc.

talked to a twra man yesterday said they have found a couple of cases of rabies in east tn, all i know is 70 days ago i was striking coons rite out of the drop as i have for years in these places i hunt, then it went to nothing, or dogs having to go a long way to finnally get struck, hardwood bottomland full of food i figured something was off now they come out with a warning . i personally have not found or seen any sick or dead coons, but i have seen a major change in most places ive hunted for years.
