Low Platelet Counts

Has anyone ever had a dog with low platelets that was ever considered something hereditary? We have a bear dog that came ill last summer and took him to the vet and we found his platelets were really low. He's been on meds since and we have gotten them up. However, he has tested negative for any tick borne diseases that could have caused it our vet said. Our vet recommends not to breed him in case it is hereditary. Never dealt with this before and he is a really nice hound so just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this.

Google is your friend. Lot of causes and quite similar to humans. Can get very expensive to get to root cause and treatment. Hope it turns out well for you.

It makes me think more of liver issues or leukemia as far as chronic disease but I'm not a vet. Ticks, fleas and other parasites can also make dogs severely anemic. If you hadn't been watching this with a vet for a while the later are my first instincts. Poor nutrition, some viruses and bacteria, exposure to various toxins and some medication can also be the root cause. Dogs are much like humans, there are hereditary causes but usually it is environmental exposure in one way or another.

back in 87 I bought a female in Iowa that was having problems turned out that her sire had the same problem as did her grandsire.... the vets involved were giving those 2 transfusions from "donor dogs".
