Close Call

Folks be careful while mowing, I had a really close call Thursday evening while mowing. I have a John Deere zero turn mower and while mowing I got to close to the edge of a ditch and my mower slid off backwards in the ditch. A barbwire fence stopped my mower from going any farther, but I was in a mess. I managed to get off the mower only to fall backwards over the barbwire fence. I got my right hand caught in the barbwire and could not get loose. I was bleeding like a stuck pig and was trapped. Finally got my neighbor to hear me and he came down and cut me out of the fence. Life saving took me to the hospital where they removed the barb wire from my hand. I spent the night in the hospital without any sleep. Got home Friday evening and sleep on and off until Saturday evening. I feel like I got run over by a train, sore does not describe my condition. Looking back, it could have been much worse and I am lucky it was not. Please be careful mowing with these Big mowers. DO NOT take any chances, you can weed eat what you can not mow. Dave

They are good mowers but can get away from you on a incline and are heavy.Talking to a dealer the other day and he was showing me one that had 4 wheel steering.Supposed to be safer on hills.Glad your ok.Your right it could have been alot worse.

Dave its not everyday you come across somebody else that's wrote off a lawn mower. Fifteen years ago I had a similar experience without the fence to stop me from ending up 55 feet over the bank. Broke both arms,jaw,eye socket,ribs,and bruised breast bone bad (likely hurt the worst). I'll tell ya same as they told me...leave the lawn mower alone and buy a goat.

It's an exclusive club. You,me,and George Jones lol. Someday you will think it's funny. So they tell me. Hang in there.

Dave glad uour okay! Several years ago a man was mowing his ditch not far from us and his tipped back on him and killed him. He'd been mowing that slope for decades but all it takes is once where things go bad fast.

glad your ok but those zero turns are dangerous if your ground has much slope they will get away from you in a heartbeat

Glad to hear you made it out of that situation relatively in good shape!!

Man, that could have been a lot worse outcome.!!

A young athletic man in my area was loading his zero turn on a trailer like he done many times when it upset on him. It literally suffocated him to death as it was to heavy on him to shove it off. He left behind his wife and children way to early in life.
U have some sound advice for everyone out there Dave.

Glad you are ok

I had a close call this year, too. My horse fell with in in March. I broke my clavicle, 6 ribs and my tibia. From March 3rd until the 23rd, I was in the Trauma unit, hospital or rehab. I still have to walk with a brace and cane and can't lift anything more than a cellphone with my left hand. I wasn't feeling all that lucky
until a friend got killed on his horse last weekend when it reared and went over backwards on him.
My husband wanted a zero turn awhile ago, the dealer had delivered our tractor a few years before that and told him he wouldn't recommend for us because we have a hillside to mow. A friend had got killed when his riding mower rolled on him a few yrs before that, so we aren't getting a zero turn ever.

Hope you get feeling well soon and have a full recovery. I can imagine how painful being caught in barb wire would be. I was lucky, I had my cellphone with me. I called my neighbor to get my husband. Of course, he went the wrong way coming to find me, but eventually he made it.

I am very sorry to hear of your horse accident, horses can be very dangerous especially falling or rearing over backwards. I had one trip and fall with me several years ago, lucky that I only broke my left thumb, I was very cautious after that. We have show horses and my wife still shows them. Thank you for the kind comments and wishes. I sure hope you have a full recovery and don't become afraid to ride again. It's best to make sure the shoes are not over grown and redone on a timely basis. I personally will not keep a horse that rears up, they will eventually get you hurt. Dave
