Dogtra Pathfinder compared to Garmin 10

I'm thinking I might update my tracking equipment. Heard a lot of good things about dogtra but also heard the 10 operates similar and maybe a little easier. Basically do everything on the 10 handheld except the map. Can anyone add to this and help me understand which would work best. Have had the Alpha 100 but maybe time to replace. Thanks

We have used and sold both. They are both reliable systems. The alpha 10 only relies on your phone for mapping. The mapping isn’t as good on the alpha 10 as the pathfinder.. if you have any questions feel free to message me or give us a call/text. 937 869 6818

pathfinder

I guess im the only one having this problem with the pathfinder. Been using it for close to two years. I have sent it in three times, has never helped.Guess i just got used to puting up with it.But every once in a while it will just freez up.When i catch up with the dog all the lights are on and seem to be working rite. But it will show the dog maybe 400 yards away from where it actually is. When i turn the collar off and then back on it works fine again.

What kind of phone are you using- how old is it?

I have the 10 and have used it since last fall. I have a newer I-phone and it does not have much effect on my battery.
Pros
- Maps are better than Alpha 100
- It rarely looses signal
- I think its easy to use and it holds a charge very good
- Its small and convenient to carry.

Cons
-I don't really having to look at my phone and my handheld when using the shock/tone feature.
- The map on your phone does not show the dog distances in yards.

That is odd you are having those issues. Wish I could trouble shoot it for you....I've had mine for several years and had no issues at all with it.

With all new phones they update a lot. The biggest problem people have with dogtra pathfinder is their phone isn’t up to date with the phone updates. Nothing to do with dogtra just the phone. I keep check that my phone is aways up to date with the latest update for it. Go in your phone settings and check for updates.

I thought mine did but usually when I check there is a new update. I am running a IPhone 12 mini so I could use the Apple Watch on my system

battery life.

I have garmin 430 and dogtra pathfinder I bought 6 months ago. I really like the pathfinder but. If you can not retrieve the hound one night and have to go back the next day to find it, will you have enough battery time on your phone. The garmin uses lithium AA batteries and will run for a couple days , giving you more time to find you hound. Dogtra- when you have multiple hounds , you have more buttons to press if you have to shock both hounds. The compass on the dogtra I can trust, on the garmin I have to calibrate it every hour or two. Really like the satelite view on the dogtra , and it is free. I have a big screen on my phone , 3 by 7 inches.

Am I missing something? Why wouldn't you charge your phone when you go home before you go back out?

pairing mode

The GPS Collar pairing mode is used to pair the GPS receiver and the GPS connector. I have one collar that never gives me trouble. I have a 2nd collar where I have to pair it to the gps connector about once a week. I take my hounds out every night at 2 am now that I am retired. Just for a long walk or if they strike from the road I have to retrieve them off a tree or call them in. I am gonna do an update and see if that corrects my problem.

I have a pathfinder and thought about one but are you saying you can not shock or tone from your phone but only the handheld?

Yes you have to use the handheld for the shock/tone feature.

from phone

you shock the dog from your phone. If you are looking at the map , you have to hit e-collar , then the dog you wish to shock , then you can hit tone or shock. Now if you want to shock the other dog , you have to back up one screen , select dog , then shock. So there are alot of times you have to hit the screen 3 times to shock the dog. I am use to using a Tri-tronics pro 90. one toggle swith and hit the button is much faster to use for better timing of when you shock. If you only had one collar , or one dog that needs the shocking , then you could just leave it on the one screen and it is only hit the button to shock the dog. It is when you want to change the dogs you want to shock and when you are viewing the map and want to change to the e-collar you have to hit 3 buttons to go to the shocking screen on your phone.

connector

The hand held connector. After you turn on the connector and start the dogtra app on your phone , then I just put the connector in my pocket and do not have to touch it until you and done hunting , then turn it off.

I had a phone that the battery saving mode was causing this
