Help

I got one fouled up and need some advice or see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Dog is an 8 year old finished dog. A coon treeing machine in tough hunting down in SC. She is nice. A get gone no reverse type hound. This is one anyone would keep in their kennel.

She was late on her cycle, and ever since she has come out of it she will not go hunt. I could walk her a mile in and cut her loose and she u turns and head back to the truck and lays down.

I took her to my vet and got every test I could done on her, and she’s healthy as an ox.

What is wrong with her??

How long since she came out of heat?

I know you said you had her to a vet and they should sure know more than me!

Has she ever had pups? Older females that have had pups are susceptible to having a pyometra develop in the uterus. Essentially, a pyometra is an infection.

I’ve had it happen in a couple of older females over the years. An open pyometra will usually present a thick pinkish vaginal discharge. A closed pyometra has no discharge. The 2 cases I have experience with were both open. Both females were over 10 yrs. of age so I put them both down.

Both my females became lethargic and went off their feed
as well. Hope you can get her squared away!

I had one that did the same thing for several weeks after going out of heat. Turned her with another dog that got treed a couple hundred yards from the truck and went in and knocked the coon out. My female left the truck and came flying in to the tree. She went back to hunting fine afterwards.

I’m bumping this thread in hopes someone else with a similar experience will see it.

The endocrine system that controls hormones is a crazy thing. If you hadn't already had her to the vet I would have suggested having her checked for a uterine infection as DL NH mentioned or a urinary track infection as both can cause issues in females and aren't that uncommon. If he didn't check for those take her back. Another thing to watch for is if she starts showing signs of a false pregnancy. They aren't dangerous but would account for hormonal changes that can make her not act like her normal self.

i would get a second opion, your vet may be right , ive lost a high dollar female from a uturis infection first vet missed it, second vets couldnt turn it around she was dead within a week once she went off feed. u dont want to get to that point.
