moon

this has been my experience in the last 26 years of coonhunting, week of new moon & week of full moon it's probably best to stay home! tonight i made 7 drops and didn't even draw a bark! that has happened many times on the new moon nights!

This may be different in different parts of the country, but I don't see how since we all use the same moon. LOL My hunting partner and I have discussed this many times and never found the moon phase to have any effect on dog performance. It would be interesting to compare scores on some of the bigger competition hunts with moon phases.

I live in North Georgia and have never saw the moon affect a hunt. I love hunting a full moon night. Love new moons too. Come to think of it I hunt most nights. Never needed an excuse other than the dog power.

If the new moon and full moon affect animal movement then chances are it affects dogs and humans…something I have thought about but don’t know enough about to even develop a theory…

Same thing with feeding times…
When fishing I try to use feeding times with tide levels and movements…

The moon MIGHT have an effect on behavior but not on scent or appetite, when they are hungry they feed, when they feed they leave scent, and when they leave scent a dog can tree them.

Yea I reckon they smell the same either way lol.

Shadinc I hadn't considered that possibility lol. I've had some real good hunts on full moon nights...but it's the exception.

Always heard that if the moon can affect the water on earth (tides). Then us and other animals that are made up of about 70% water are affected also.

I have found that at the same time everyday. The situation with animals feeding are different. I watch a lot of game cameras and share info with others that have cameras in the area.

One thing I have found. A really good dog can overcome a lot of things to get the coon up a tree and have the meat. Some nights are easier and some nights it appears to be a struggle. But the outcome is a coon.

If your competition hunting, all the dogs have the same obstacles to overcome.

Maybe Fauci and his woohan branch labs can study the effects as they did the covid 19. I am sure they could come up with some effects that we could not possibly imagine. They could have an excuse to shutdown the the country once a month and spend millions trying to find a vaccine that will keep us from experiencing any effects of the moon.

I'm sure you will tree more pines and dens on moonlit nights. May be because coons can see better to run, only excuse I have. I was introduced to daytime coonhunting in the Carolina coastal swamps back in the 70's. Sure could have some good races but the majority of trees were dens.

Of course the moon phase has an influence on game movement. There are entire websites dedicated to predicting this and showing its influence. Is it possible to have a good night of hunting with a full moon,? Sure. If there are a lot of other factors in your favor. In fact last year we had a warm spell after a long time of cold in very early March. It was bright as could be...but coon were all over. Another good time is before a big weather front moving in.

All thing being equal though I've always preferred my hunting in the darker the better with a little breeze and damp conditions. Allowing dogs to use the wind gives them a huge advantage whether the coon are on the ground or laid up. I definatelltly look at the wind direction and turn loose accordingly.

I'm positive no matter what somebody in the ukc board has the dog power to tree coon no matter where or when...ive seen that for YEARS on here..me..im a regular guy and I like to tree coon and not have to walk a mile to do it so ill watch my weather wind and conditions.

Moon

Ok boys! Yes moon effects everything. Look for a falling/setting moon. You want to be hunting or fishing when the moon is under foot. Or in other words shining on other side of the earth from u. Last five days of a waxing or growing moon will be best week to hunt up until full moon. Then activity drops way off when moon starts waning or shrinking. Your Garmin has all this info stored and u will be surprised how accurate it is! Scroll down to Hunt/game and check it out on your garmin.

Moon Phase

I know guys it seems far fetched. I run offshore charters off coast of NC and was ignorant to the moon till 2006. I could not figure out how I was getting out fished by the old timers. They were zoned in on the Moon phase/major feeding times and once I learned this and how it changes every day, I was able to zone in and maximize our trips. It boils down to the animal kingdom being more active during the major periods. Including humans. Not saying you cannot have success during a minor period/low activity, but knowing when the game is active should be a plus to any hunter.
