Reuben help me understand the dogs you run.
From reading the board. Hog Dogs is your choice of dog. I know hog dogs and hog hunting has several different methods to it.
Some guys will use a few cur hounds that don't bark much get the dog bayed and when they hear those dogs. They get in there with a catch dog and make quick work of the hog.
Some guys use hounds to run them and bay them A hog can run a lot faster and further than most people think. Once the hound has bayed they then get in there with or without a catch dog and take care of the hog.
No matter the method. I have a handful of guys that there hog dogs are the best trained dogs I have ever seen. From the catch dog to the ones trailing, running or baying. One guy does a lot of filming of the hunts and his hunts goes like this. The outcome and the dog handling depends on how the hog will be dispatched. Some are shot, some are stuck and some are hobbled and taken out alive. The ones shot are bayed and when he gets there. He just calls his dogs back. Yes, 4 or 5 dogs in a frenzy just called back 10 or 15 yards so they are in no danger of getting shot. The ones stuck have someone slip in and get it by the back legs. Another person sticks it. The dogs are called back once the dog is under control of the first guy grabbing it. The ones with the catch dogs is about the same. The catch dogs I have seen are the best trained dogs. They walk in there cool calm and collected. They when patted on the head they turn into a hog catching monster. They are called off the hog with some simple words once the hog is controlled by a person and hobbled. These dogs work to perfection. If they didn't there would be a lot of injury as hog hunting is a tough sport.

You have to have a whole lot of faith in your catch dog to wade in by yourself, knock him down and stick or tie a big boar hog.
.
Generally you not by yourself to do all that. Takes a two or three man crew. I think hog hunting is number 3 on my list. I get most of my pleasure seeing just how well trained these guys have their dogs.

Guys I hunted with, the first one there got to do the stick'n. Then I hunted with an older gentleman who was a little slow.
Yes, hogs can run all day…in the thick briar patches it is hard to catch them when they are dog smart…they tend to run from briar patch to the next briar patch and then they rest a little while before the dogs get too close before running again…personally I’d rather not use a bulldog but I do own one…
Back in my younger days when we had more hunting places available my favorite way was running 5 of my dogs at once…if they caught a big boar they would keep him bayed and caught…or a combination of both…the hog wouldn’t be able to run…as the dogs tired they eased up and bayed…once they heard me coming they fired up and caught again…I used to encourage that when I got there and then I would stick the hog…it was during these times that a dog can get hurt pretty bad because they throw caution to the wind…this put knots in my stomach just thinking about what could happen in a split second…I started carrying a 22 mag pistol and I trained my dogs to back away and I just shot the hog…this helped in minimizing injuries…
When my brother and I first started hunting we caught mostly sows and shoats…we bought a big wild boar from a friend that didn’t have any more use for it…we had built a training pen and we put him in it and had our dogs bay…one or two dogs at a time…not long after we started catching nothing but boar hogs and once in a while a sow or shoat…before, in keeping it easy we would catch a shoat or young sow and stage a rigging situation or a hunt…
I now use running vest on the dogs that need it…

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...

Thanks for your input.
