Use of coon scent.

I am just not understanding in this day and age the use of coon scent. I can understand if you have a young Son or Daughter and you want to do something together with a pup and mess with some scent. Excite the kids and the perhaps the pup. Thats great. But if the goal is actually training the pup. Just take it to the woods. Put some dog food in an area to attract coon and you will have all the coon scent you need. Plus there are several other lessons the pup is learning getting from the dog pen to the woods.

Best use I ever found for training scent was to put some on a rag and rub a tree. (50 years ago) While doing that, turn the dog you had in the box loose and get it to bark treed. That would then call in the dog your were trying to find and catch. Then tracking equipment came along and took all the fun out of hunting. LOL Never will forget the first night I got my BEEP BEEP tracking box. I was standing in a dirt road in the middle of the night with the tracking outfit telling me the dogs were straight ahead right down the road. They then walked up behind me and scared the heck out of me.

Now I know some that has a garmin and a large antenna in their yard. They turn the dogs loose and go sit in an easy chair. They watch the action on the screen and when they tree, they then tone them to come back home. Now if I could just get the wife to put the collars on the dogs and operate the garmin. I wouldn't have to do anything but dip my cookies in the milk and enjoy the hunt.

That reminds me of a friend of mine when he said…ole BJ is way over there about a mile…probably has a hog bayed…after a little while we said, we’ll just go get him so we can go home…we were about to get on the 4 wheelers when we saw ole BJ taking a nap under the trailer…that happened more than once
