Dog losing Hair

I have a young male dog i acquired back early this spring. he started losing hair From the underside of his neck, chest, inside his legs, feet ,and the bottom side of his belly. Also around his mouth and some blisters here and there.
He’s in a above ground kennel with wood floor. No straw in the box and no fleas or mange.
I’ve took him to the vet and he had a yeast infection they said. Gave him steroids and some type of inflammatory pills. Seemed to reduce the redness and seemed to help with his hair coming back in while he was on the medicine for 20 days.
Then again he started back just like before and back to the vet and they told me it wasn’t mange, must be food Allergies.

He was fed Pride and Pleasure 21/10 before I got him.
I switched him to The Pride Pro series 27/20 and I believe that may be his problem.
I switched him to Dog chow in the green bag. 21/10 I believe, and he started doing better. Growing hair and getting skin pigment back.
Ran out of that and decided to switch to Purina one Beef and rice 26/16. Sure enough he started looking bad again.
Friend of mine said it could be hotspots to lower the Protein and that may fix the problem. Not sure, has anyone had this problem before?

Did the vet mention or check him for red mange? The blisters you mentioned. Are they like little pimples and some seem to be infected.

Keep us posted on the outcome.

The vet drawed his blood and said it wasn’t red mange.
The blisters clear up almost overnight once I switch his feed to something like dog chow. I was thinking it was that type of mange but the vet said it wasn’t. I’m not sure

He's probably allergic to the dogfood as vet said. I know a guy who went through this same thing spent countless hours and alot money from meds special soaps daily baths etc etc nothing helped . changed dog food it cleared up problem solved .
I'd ask vet what dogfood he'd recommend you trying until u find one that works.

I had fed a dog food for many years…then I slowly had to increase feed to maintain weight…two of my dogs started looking mangy and one developed ear infections and those two had a fatty tumor each on the rump…some folks on here talked about dog food issues…

I swapped dog foods and my dogs got well…

Checked for the common ingredients that are on the feeds.
Wheat, and another common allergy problem is caused by brewers yeast .
Found out with dogs I had that got what looked like greasy weeping sores and chronic ear infections on another

I had a dog 15 years ago that did just fine on the Dog chow Green bag. If I hunted him hard more than 3 nights a week he'd start getting skinny. So I tried other feeds with higher protean and fat. Then the problems start, ear trouble, hot spots, rash etc.. Found out after doctoring a bunch, that Dog chow was the way to go, just feed twice as much of it when hunting him hard, no problems.
Learned latter that he was allergic to wheat. Could not bed him with straw, or feed him anything with wheat in it.

What dog food can do

I have a 2-year-old female here that's as nice a young dog as I've ever seen. She's been treeing coons consistently since she's 7 months old. She ate green bag Purina all her life. Last November I thought it would be good to go to a higher protein feed in the winter. This pup was lost. She couldn't trail and didn't tree a coon in a month. My other two dogs weren't affected any. The only thing different was her feed. I switched her back to green bag Purina and in two weeks she was treeing coons again. I'm not saying green bag Purina is the ultimate dog food, but for her it is. If I had been feeding the higher protein feed when she was a pup I probably would have culled her. I read on this forum all the time, sometimes all they need is a change of address. I wonder if some of that could be a change of diet? I'm also not saying it was the protein causing her problem, but something in that dog food was obviously affecting her nose.

I hope you are right, I was just hoping someone had a magical way to get this hair back on him lol. It’s coming in very slowly but taking a long time. If I could find out what he’s allergic too would probably help me.

That’s one problem with Dog chow for me is that I don’t figure it will keep weight on him when I am hunting 6 nights a week. But maybe if I can find out what he’s allergic to in the feed I can get this fixed. I don’t bed this dog in straw because I was thinking that was his problem but I will just try to eliminate the feed and bedding and see what his problem is. It’s probably just the feed. Thanks

I believe his problem is in his diet but not real sure. Does better on the low end with the dog chow. Usually the 27/20 feed I use has a hard enough time keeping weight on a dog when hunted hard. But if I can figure out his problem here I will worry about the rest later lol
If they sold the feed he was on when I got him back I would try the same feed. But it’s not around my area. Thanks for the help

Tyler, I fed Dog Chow to my old female her whole life and she lived 14.5 years. She did very well on it but like said before, when hunting them hard, you will have to up the amount you feed. The only drawback you face is feeding 2 different types of food. I'm feeding Pride Pro Series in the lime green bag and my female does great on it. I tried the orange bag and her stool was very loose so I switched back. I would say your problem is definitely in the food your feeding so just feed what he does best on. Dog Chow is one of the least expensive dog foods out there so the price per bag shouldn't matter much. Good luck!

I always feed the Pride 27/20 to every dog I have and they do great. I also feed the 21/17 Lime Green bag. I like them both. The 27/20 does great on every dog I have but this young male. I think it’s the wheat in the feed. Pride don’t make feed without wheat I don’t believe. Dog chow is wheat free and seems to be working. That’s my theory now lol

I've read every post on here and learned some great info from you guys. I feed the pride pro in the orange bag and love it, I had a dog come down with Ramdomyolysis a few weeks back and he's been laid up for a spell and has some of the same spots come up on him. All my dogs love the food and look really good but as cheap as the dog chow in the green bag is, I might just run out tomorrow and get a bag and try it a week or so. This is what this forum is for.

I still like the Pride. I think it’s good feed for the money. Only time I’ve had a problem with it is now. And I’ve fed this dog Pride as a 8 week old pup and no issues. But something must of changed down the line over time. Hope this helps with your problem as well. I will give a update in a week or two.

My best hound has broken out in hives all over his body twice this summer. Never had a problem before and he is 7. My other hound is fine, so whatever it is isn't catching--they are loose together in the house and a fenced yard when not hunting. Pretty sure it's an environmental allergy, not food. We haven't changed food, although the feed companies reformulate all the time. The hives got weepy, smelly and itchy, so the vet gave me antibiotics for him (cefalex) and I've been giving him Benadryl. I also washed him off well with medicated shampoo and a good rinse. The vet also gave me a cortisone topical mousse to calm the itch, which we only used at the beginning. I took his collar off because he seemed irritated beneath it. He lost a lot of fur in the itchy spots--it fell out in lumps with bits of skin attached. He is recovering nicely. Whatever the problem is, handling him makes my hands itchy too. I'm guessing it is some sort of airborne pollen and am looking forward to fall!

You said you fed the dog Pride Pro Series because you couldnt get the feed he was previously on. You said you have fed this dog pride aince he was 8 weeks old with no issues. I would forget about what he was fed before you got him. At 8 weeks old he hasnt ate enough of the feed to determine how he would react to the feed. All the feed you have mentioned contain wheat including Dog Chow. How old is the dog now? How long has this been going on? An allergy test can be ran at the vet clinic. You said he has a yeast infection. You need to get him on some probiotics. The reason is yeast infections are caused by an inbalance of good and bad bacteria. The probiotics put back the good bacteria needed to kill the bad bacteria.
